What happens when a religion of the powerless becomes powerful? Friedrich Nietzsche argued that Christianity’s moral framework emerged from a reversal of power: the oppressed became righteous, while their rulers became evil. In this video, Britt Hartley explores master morality, slave morality, and ressentiment—and uses Nietzsche’s critique to examine Christian nationalism, religious persecution narratives, and the relationship between Christianity and political power. From Nero and the number 666 to American Christians defending Donald Trump, the question is whether faith challenges domination or gives it divine permission.

A Message From Anthony, Britt Hartley’s Producer:
I wanted to address some of the pushback Britt received over our video, “10 Terrifying Bible Monsters That Sound Completely Made Up,” and explain how those visuals came together.
This was intended to be a fun video for Halloween week. Britt expressed a desire to see these biblical creatures come to life, so I took the liberty of creating something extra within a short turnaround. We rarely create additional graphics or animated visuals for our videos, and even with these tools, this took about 8hrs to put together.
To be transparent, the images I was provided were AI-generated, and I used AI to animate them. I then added sound design and music to give the creatures atmosphere and a little more life. None of the music or sound effects were AI-generated.
Part of the reason for using generated images was the limited artwork available depicting some of these fascinating creatures. I also wouldn’t have felt comfortable taking another artist’s work and animating it without their permission.
We understand the concerns surrounding generative AI in content creation, particularly questions about consent, how these systems are trained, and the impact on working artists. Those concerns deserve a thoughtful conversation.
I'm familiar, with the pushback for creative tools as someone who has worked in Television, Film and in the Online video space for decades. Photoshop, Illustrator, and 3D digital art, plug-ins and templates all faced resistance and filmmakers have long debated CGI versus practical effects and miniatures. These comparisons don’t resolve the specific concerns about AI, but they help explain why I approached these tools as another way to experiment creatively.
My intention was to make something fun that complemented Britt’s storytelling. I’m sorry for the frustration or offense these creations caused, and I want to take responsibility for the production choices I made.
If you’re an artist who would like to create your own interpretations of these biblical creatures, we would love to see them and, with your permission and proper credit, share them with our audience. It would be amazing to see more depictions of these strange, fascinating beings and the different ways artists imagine them.

NEW BOOK AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/831129/everything…
A clear-eyed manual for building a life of meaning in the chaos of the modern world
So you’ve realized life is meaningless. Religion is fake, your job is pointless, society is a charade, and everyone else is just pretending things are fine when, in reality, existential despair is the only logical reaction to any of this. You’re staring into the abyss—but author and spiritual coach Britt Hartley is here to pull you back from the edge.
Hartley has traveled deep into the void of nihilism herself after deconstructing her faith and every other belief system she could think of, and she knows firsthand how to rebuild a meaningful life from scratch without sugarcoating or toxic positivity. In this book, she shares the tools of philosophy, spirituality, psychology, and creativity that have helped her and countless of her clients rediscover how to live. You’ll learn how to:
Confront the fear of death, meaninglessness, and loneliness
Shift to a perspective based on experience, play, and quiet joy
Unearth the core values already guiding your inner compass
Connect deeply with other humans on their own unique journeys
And much more, all without being asked to put on a smile or believe anything unbelievable
Yes, maybe it’s true that everything is stupid, the world is on fire, and nothing matters. But as Hartley demonstrates, that only means we have the opportunity to define our own lives in the ways that matter most—and move forward with purpose.

What if the spiritual advice to “lose your ego” is exactly the wrong advice for someone who has already spent years losing herself? In this episode of No Nonsense Spirituality, atheist spiritual director Brit Hartley explores ego dissolution, ego death, and the spiritual double standard surrounding motherhood. Through the lens of gender socialization under patriarchy, she asks why temporary experiences through meditation, psychedelics, fasting, and retreats can earn men recognition as spiritual teachers, while the profound identity changes of pregnancy, childbirth, and caregiving are treated as ordinary expectations.

What happens after you deconstruct religion, stop believing in God, and realize that simply tearing down old beliefs may not be enough? In this conversation, we explore atheism, Christianity, religious deconstruction, spirituality, human wellbeing, community, myth, ritual, meaning, and the difficult question of what secular people should build after leaving religion. The discussion challenges both religious fundamentalism and rigid forms of atheism while asking whether truth and human experience really have to be enemies.

Why do so many people suddenly "find God" after hitting rock bottom? This video explores the psychology behind religious conversion during times of crisis and examines why men and women often gravitate toward different redemption narratives. Using examples including Taylor Frankie Paul, Conor McGregor, Shia LaBeouf, and broader psychological research, this discussion explores how identity, trauma, attachment, culture, and gender influence the kinds of beliefs people embrace when life falls apart.

What happens when you're taught from childhood that your body can't be trusted? In this video, Britt Hartley explores how Christian doctrine—particularly original sin, purity culture, and patriarchal teachings—can create a lifelong disconnect between people and their bodies. Using a viral video of a father preaching to his infant daughter as a starting point, she examines how these beliefs can shape emotional development, sexuality, intuition, anger, and identity long after someone leaves Christianity.
