Keto, Muscle Building, and Longevity After 40: A Brilliant Tool or a Dead End?
On a standard ketogenic diet (SKD), the best-case scenario is maintaining what you already have, but you can forget about building new muscle tissue—what’s more, a portion of the research clearly shows an actual loss of muscle mass. Even under ideal conditions, with high protein intake and heavy resistance training, scientific literature indicates at most the preservation of existing tissue, without any meaningful hypertrophy. Without carbohydrates, you shut down the primary anabolic signal (mTOR), limit the supportive role of insulin, and deplete muscle glycogen. As a result, you either lose muscle or plateau—a terrible investment. New muscle tissue is your ultimate "caloric furnace," yielding a higher metabolic rate and offering the simplest path to maintaining low body fat for years to come.
After the age of 40, this strategy becomes particularly dangerous. As you age, anabolic hormone levels naturally decline, and resistance to growth stimuli increases. Without glycogen, training performance plummets, resting cortisol rises, and joint recovery suffers. At this age, standing still in terms of muscle mass simply means accelerated aging of your musculoskeletal system.
Meanwhile, in the context of longevity, muscle is your most critical asset:
- Metabolic Insurance: Muscle tissue absorbs the majority of blood glucose, directly protecting against type 2 diabetes.
- Protection Against Sarcopenia: After 30, we naturally lose 3–8% of our muscle mass per decade. Lacking muscle in old age leads to falls and a loss of independence.
- Bone Density: Heavy strength training fueled by carbohydrates provides the single most effective stimulus to protect against osteoporosis.
- A Reserve in Illness: Greater muscle mass drastically increases survival rates during severe infections and hospitalizations.
Who is keto actually for, then?
The ketogenic diet has a narrow, specific application. It serves as an excellent medical tool for rapidly reversing fatty liver disease, lowering insulin, and controlling appetite in sedentary, severely overweight individuals over 50–60 years old.
The Bottom Line: As a short-term therapeutic tool for inactive individuals, keto works great. However, if you want to build strength, metabolic health, and lifelong functional fitness after 40, sticking to keto is like driving with the handbrake fully engaged.

HIIT Grow
Hey team!
I was checking the channel analytics recently and you guys absolutely blew my mind... Over 90% of you are watching my workouts on a TV screen! 🤯📺
That’s a huge signal for me. Since you are crushing these sessions in your living rooms on the big screen, the quality and readability need to be top-notch. I took your feedback into account and upgraded the editing for all upcoming videos:
1. Bigger PIP (Picture-in-Picture) Preview: The preview window showing the next exercise is now significantly larger. No more squinting at the end of a round – you'll see exactly what's coming next instantly! 🥊
2. More Voice-Over / Audio Cues: I’m adding more voice guidance so you can focus on your form and breathing instead of constantly staring at the screen.
3. New Dynamic Descriptions & Effects: On-screen text and timers are sharper and optimized for big displays, keeping you perfectly on track.
My goal is to make every single HIIT Grow session as smooth, clear, and effective as possible for you. Check out the latest videos and let me know in the comments how you like the new changes! 👇🔥
Thanks for being here, let’s keep building! 🦾🏋️♂️
