NASCAR didn't ban the Plymouth Superbird by name.
Instead, they changed the engine displacement rules specifically to make it uncompetitive. No more than 305 cubic inches for any car with aerodynamic bodywork modifications. The Superbird ran a 426.
On paper — still legal to race.
In practice — never raced again.
One year of production. 18 wins with Richard Petty. 200 mph at Talladega. Then silence.
So here's the question the investigation left open:
👉 If a governing body changes its rules specifically to eliminate one car — is that a ban?
