Chinese AI Startup Moonshot Limits Hacking Capabilities in New Kimi Model

Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has reduced the cyber-offensive capabilities of its latest model, Kimi K3.1 Pro, amid growing concerns that advanced AI could make hacking easier and more automated.

The company describes Kimi K3.1 Pro as its most capable 3-trillion-parameter-class open-weight model. Moonshot plans to release its model weights publicly by November 4, allowing developers to run and modify the model on their own systems.

To reduce cybersecurity risks, Moonshot said it removed cyber-related data from the model’s training materials and reinforcement-learning environments while retaining its general coding capabilities.

The company said it does not want to release open-weight models that push cyber capabilities to the absolute frontier.

The move highlights a growing challenge for the AI industry: making powerful models available to developers while limiting their potential misuse. Security experts warn that AI systems capable of writing code and completing complex tasks could help attackers discover software vulnerabilities and automate parts of cyberattacks.

Trump Removes Some Canadian Tariffs but Adds New Products to the List
