Welcome to the Best-Shaped State of Michigan! My name is Kosta. I maintain my lawn & garden in Zone 6b, Macomb Township, Michigan (Metro Detroit).
I spend a lot of time wondering if my plants are still alive and looking at new plants to eventually replace those that succumb. This is my trial & error journey of un-aliving plants in the pursuit of one day having less lawn and less anxiety.
Lawn Care is a hobby & I've been "the guy with the nice lawn" for the past decade, but I'm now more interested in improving my landscaping aesthetic. I enjoy learning about perennials — especially Japanese Maples & Conifers, and how to keep them alive over our brutal Michigan winters and humid summers.

Here are a few pics from my latest Oxalis / Wood Sorrel Weed Killer video.
These are the burn / kill spots caused by one of the products I tested. They both killed the same weed, but only one product was truly Lawn Safe and the other caused this burn damage to my lawn. Watch the whole video so you don't use the product that will burn your lawn.
I will eventually post a follow-up on the spots if they end up healing on their own or completely die off. I'm optimistic that they'll green up in a week or so with a bunch of rain.

The lawn has bounced back after a rough August where it also struggled for 2-weeks after a scalp & dethatch. October & November should be the best it will look.
Meanwhile, my plant wishlist is getting out of control! May the real estate gods give us a break already…

Tired of one and done videos and no follow-up as to how a product actual worked? Here's my 1-Week Update on the Captain Jack's LawnWeed Brew...
I've used this product twice now and both times I've had amazing results in 24-hours. The yellowing I've mention that appears a few days later has pretty much faded away now. It hasn't done great on my Oxalis, but is knocking it down slowly. It has worked amazing on my dandelions, which is primarily what I had in the backyard. My backyard was peppered with weeds, but probably less than half a percent now. Good news... my second app took care of the newly popped up weeds and looks like I may have finally eradicated them once and for all... or at least this season.

Found some Puffball Mushrooms in the backyard just now. Luckily, these are considered non-toxic to dogs (but I don’t let Willow near any ‘shrooms) and they’re on the other side of the snow fence.
Why the snow fence? It keeps Willow away and safe from our neighbor’s Canadian Thistle that spreads underground and has crept up in spots 6-FEET into our yard. It can spread up to at least 20-feet away.
I’ll dig ‘em out with a shovel tomorrow when I mow…

Quick update on the Captain Jack’s LawnWeed Brew…
While it IS rated for killing Oxalis (Wood Sorrel), I’m not seeing it work for me on the Wood Sorrel I have in my lawn. Maybe it's the variety?
I'll be posting an update video on the state of the back lawn 1-week after this application. Look for that in a few days.
I have a bunch of small spots like the one in this picture and then a pretty large area maybe 12”x12” of Oxalis and the LawnWeed Brew didn’t do anything. Odd, because I’ll find little patches where it shriveled them up and they turned white/brown.
I also have a fresh batch of weeds that have popped up, but can tell these are new in the past 2-days as there isn’t a dark ring around them from the iron. Might be hard to get new apps down because we have rain coming in.
I have a different product for Oxalis that I’ll be using that I mainly bought for Creeping Charlie, but also works on oxalis. Look for that soon...

Anyone else bitten by Bentgrass or Sod Webworm damage in Late Summer?
This video should help you identify the damage if you're unsure.
I'm still waiting for the grass seed I want to come in, so still have some bare spots that need to be filled in. That said, the lawn still looks like a 10 from the street!
