4 UNUSUAL TRADITIONS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER IN A RUSSIAN-SPEAKING FAMILY

Here are 4 unusual traditions from the story:

🌹 1. An odd number of flowers

When giving flowers as a gift, people traditionally choose an odd number — for example, 3, 5, or 7 flowers. Even numbers are traditionally associated with funerals. That’s why Paul brings five roses for Masha’s mom.

🥿 2. Slippers for guests

When you visit someone's home, you normally take off your outdoor shoes. Your hosts may offer you a pair of тапочки — slippers to wear inside.
Paul quickly learns that this is part of being a good guest! 😄

🍾 3. An empty bottle goes on the floor

During dinner, Masha’s dad puts an empty bottle on the table — and immediately gets reminded:
«Не ставь пустую бутылку на стол!»
An empty bottle is traditionally placed on the floor, not on the table. Putting it on the table brings bad luck.

🍰 4. Always leave room for cake!

You may think dinner is over… but there is still торт — cake and tea! 🍰
Even if you're already full, your hosts may encourage you to have at least a small piece. Hospitality means making sure your guests are well fed.

Did you know that every noun in Russian has a gender? 😯

Russian has three genders:

Masculine — мужской род
Usually ends in a consonant:
👉 стол — table
👉 дом — house
👉 учитель — teacher

Feminine — женский род
Usually ends in -а or -я:
👉 мама — mom
👉 неделя — week
👉 ночь — night

Neuter — средний род
Usually ends in -о or -е:
👉 окно — window
👉 море — sea
👉 слово — word

💡 Quick tip: These are general rules, so there are some exceptions. For example, папа and дядя are masculine even though they end in -а / -я.
