LabX from the National Academy of Sciences is a public engagement testbed that boldly experiments with a variety of creative – sometimes even unorthodox – approaches designed to reach diverse audiences. We routinely tinker with new ideas and programs but have a particular love of STEM-based games of all kinds, short videos featuring fun people doing cool science things, and showcasing surprising science stories.

Cuttlefish are out here lying about who they are to get a date. 😭🦑

Here's the science behind this meme:

Researchers found that smaller male giant cuttlefish can disguise themselves as females by changing their body patterns and posture.

Why? Because larger males guard potential mates and chase away the competition.

By looking like females, the smaller males can sneak past the guards. And when the larger male gets distracted, they make their move.

The researchers documented this sneaky behavior more than 20 times, with mating attempts often succeeding.

Turns out underwater catfishing is a scientifically documented reproductive strategy.

Should science communicators spend more time in YouTube comment sections?

We think so.

A thoughtful response to someone's question can add useful context, introduce an unexpected scientific idea, or spark a conversation that continues long after a video is published.

And unlike a new upload, you don't have to build an audience from scratch. You can join a discussion that's already happening.

We explored how science communicators can make commenting part of their engagement strategy, without turning every interaction into a sales pitch.
