"Codename: Outbreak"

A very early and very primitive implementation of the "open-world" FPS. Released as a budget game in 2001, it has its share of bargain-bin jank; but beyond that, there are a few interesting elements - such as the ability to use a long range microphone to listen in on enemies, and bodies to scavenge for supplies. Additionally, there's always a second player in the campaign - either AI-controlled or a human co-op player - which is a rarity even today.

It all starts to make sense when you realize it was the first game from a small Russian studio called GSC Game World - that would then go onto to create the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. You can see the founding DNA of the STALKER games right here.

"Castlevania: Belmont's Curse"

I am enjoying this quite a bit. I used to love a good metrovania game - but the sheer volume of them pumped out by developers over the past 5 years really took some of the enjoyment out of it. There's only so many times you can feel excited when earning a double jump...

But I took a chance on Belmont's Curse - mostly for nostalgia for Symphony of the Night. And even then, the first 15 minutes of the game was very much: "Why did I pick this up again??" - but eventually it hooks - and when it did - I started to really enjoy it.

A big part of that is the joy of motion; traversing some of the levels with the whip is a sort of primordial joy that goes all the way back to Pitfall Harry circa 1984. Another part of that is the difficulty. I have found the game perfectly walks the line of tough-but-fair (the first boss, a whole 20 minutes into the game - kicked my ass a dozen times), which keeps it from getting boring.

Having said that, I don't love the art style. The cell-shaded characters aren't my favorite. I think I still prefer the pixel art of Symphony of the Night - but thankfully it's not a major detriment to my enjoyment of the game.

Very enjoyable.
