They perform live, every day, for hours on end deep beneath the city. They are the first thing "Chicago" the encounter when coming from other countries, and they are as close as some kids will ever come to being that close to seeing instruments played at such a high level. These are hard working, put in the time performers that you can interact with. You clap, they hear and smile back. Of all the public things in the city, the performers we've all seen in the subway are the most amazing gift.
