On Oct. 1, just weeks before marking his second year in office, President Prabowo Subianto announced his largest and most consequential cabinet reshuffle, affecting 10 ministries and six state institutions. This political move is widely seen as Prabowo’s attempt to consolidate power before entering his third year.

Indonesian wildfires that have caused a regional haze crisis burned more than 1.9 million hectares in the first nine months of 2026, a monitor analysing satellite data said.
The report came as Indonesian officials said they had accepted help from neighbours Malaysia and Singapore to combat the blazes.
"We've already responded to the aid proposal... they (Malaysia) will be assisting with three aircraft and 52 personnel," Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Dudung Abdurachman told reporters in Jakarta.
Malaysia had made repeated offers of help to combat the fires that have sent air pollution levels soaring in its own capital and others in the region.
Dudung said Singapore will also provide assistance, without giving any details.
New figures from deforestation monitoring site Nusantara Atlas showed an area nearly 12 times larger than London has burned from January to the end of September, most of it as drought took hold from June, exacerbated by a strong El Nino cycle.
Indonesia's government has not provided official figures since announcing 202,000 hectares had been razed by the end of July.

The dry season brings more than heat and drought to Kalimantan’s forests.
It also blankets the ‘bekantan’ or proboscis monkey habitat in haze. These endemic animals must endure declining air quality and shrinking living space.
In South Kalimantan, the dry season intensifies pressure through frequent forest and land fires.
BPBD data from January to 1 September 2026 records 2,332 fire incidents that burned 12,339.74 hectares. SiPongi monitoring detected 17,093 hotspots in the same period.
Among remaining swamp forests and riverbanks, proboscis monkeys (*Nasalis larvatus*) rely on trees for food and movement.
No updated population census covers all of Kalimantan in 2026. The 2004 Population and Habitat Viability Assessment estimated about 25,000 individuals, with roughly 5,000 living in conservation areas. Those figures remain historical estimates.
Yayasan Sahabat Bekantan Indonesia tightens monitoring during the dry season to stop fires from entering habitat. Teams patrol the area and check air quality, temperature, and humidity to detect early fire risks. They install camera traps at key points to observe monkey presence and activity without disturbing natural movement. When natural food runs short, the foundation provides supplementary feed. This support also lets staff track the animals’ condition and habitat changes.
Meanwhile, the South Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) monitors habitats to anticipate fire impacts. Officers watch several sites in Tanah Laut Regency and work with partners to protect both the monkeys and their remaining space.
In the surviving trees and drying land, proboscis monkeys keep moving and foraging from branch to branch. For them, forest fires mean more than flames and smoke—they threaten the trees, food sources, and living space that still remain.

The world is on the cusp of an historic El Niño, a climate pattern centered in the Pacific that could reshape weather across the planet.
El Niño is hardly a new phenomenon, but forecasts indicate the coming one could be the biggest ever recorded.
Research suggests extreme El Niño years will become more common as the world rapidly warms, driven by humanity’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Indonesia is afflicted by wildfires regularly during its dry season, but this year the blazes have been turbocharged by a powerful El Nino cycle, which typically brings drought.
Experts say years of deforestation and the drying out of naturally water-logged peatlands for cultivation has also transformed formerly fire-resistant landscapes.

A September 2026 BBC Eye investigative documentary titled “The Teacher’s Shame” laid bare the anatomy of sexual violence within Indonesian pesantren (Islamic boarding schools).
Grounded in the harrowing testimonies of two female santri (students) who are alumni of Pesantren Asyiddiqiyah in Jombang, East Java, and Pesantren Abul Barokah Wanafahat in Jonggat, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, the broadcast prompted dozens of other victimized santri across the country to come forward and report their own experiences.
