Here is a film that deserves recognition:

Manila, Open City (1968) is a war film and docudrama directed by Eddie Romero about the devastating Battle of Manila during the Second World War, and how the battle against Imperial Japanese Naval troops under Admiral Iwabuchi, who disobeyed General Yamashita's orders of abandoning the city, committed atrocities against the civilian population, especially in the walled city of Intramuros. The film features Eddie Garcia, James Shigeta, Charito Solis, Alex Nicol and John Ashley. This film stands out amongst other Filipino historical films, because they mostly feature the biopics of Jose Rizal or Bonifacio, early rebellions against Spain (notably films about Lapu-Lapu), the Philippine Revolution, the Philippine-American War, the Martial Law era and EDSA, and especially due to its large scale production, featuring perspectives from the Japanese, Americans, and then finally the Filipinos, both civilians and soldiers. It's not perfect and it falls short in many ways, it may not be up to par with other historical movies of the era, but it deserves recognition for telling the story of Manila during WWII. Other Philippine historical films that deserve recognition are "Walls of Hell" by Eddie Romero, and "Oro, Plata, Mata" by Peque Gallaga, which is particularly important to me as it is about the experiences of Haciendero families set in the Island of Negros during the war. Hailing from Negros Island and having ancestors who fought as guerrilleros in the war, this definitely hits home for me and deserves a lot of recognition as well, since local contributions in the war are often less talked about, even in the Philippines. Most of these films are available online on YouTube, which serves us for the better, since we get to have a glimpse of the Filipino perspective of the Second World War in cinema.
