I couldn’t music supervise without songwriters and musicians. I want to share with you how I had an original song written for a tv series under a crazy short timeline. The original song would be performed by more than one character/actor and weaved organically into the storyline throughout season. I had a discussion with the creators of the series where they shared their vision of a love song written for the love of his life.♥️🎵

I thought of a few songwriter/musicians who could write such a song for this but I also reached out to a few sync agents to suggest ideas too. I narrowed down potential songwriter/musicians and their availability to write and turn in a demo of the song in a such a short time. I immediately started setting up one on one Zooms with each of songwriters, creators and myself. I’ve learned that direct communication between creatives and songwriters can = magic! 🪄

While having the songs written and getting the deal in place I was working on finding a music producer and recording studio to pre-record the actors singing the song for playback on set. A pre-record is a produced version of the song for the actor to lip sync to on set. We specifically want it to sound authentic live so not overly produced. Also, keep in mind that the actors will need time to practice and learn the song before the scene is shot. Also, having the song pre-recorded makes editing in post production much easier.

📝Tips I Learned the Hard Way: It’s always best to share your deadline, budget and clearance rights needed with the songwriters or sync agents upfront so there are no surprises. Most songs written specifically for a tv series or film will need to be owned by the production company. Since my timeline was tight I decided to reach out songwriters that were not signed to a major publisher or record label which could take more time to clear. Also, keep in mind that actors need enough time to practice and learn the song. Always ask for the songwriters to turn in lyrics when they submit the song.

I turned in all the songs to the creators of the series and although it was a tough choice they had to choose only one. Once the song was chosen I had our songwriter/musician shoot a video on her phone singing and playing the song on guitar slowly noting the chord changes. 🎸🎼
