Before audiences became accustomed to hearing actors speak on screen, there was The Jazz Singer.

Released in 1927, Al Jolson's landmark film used Warner Bros.' Vitaphone system to combine moving images with synchronized singing and dialogue. Although the film is still largely silent, its few moments of spoken and sung sound helped change Hollywood forever.

At the 1st Academy Awards in 1929, Warner Bros. received a Special Academy Award recognising The Jazz Singer as the pioneering talking picture that revolutionised the motion-picture industry.

The Jazz Singer is both a landmark of cinema technology and a complicated document of the culture in which it was made.
