2. HOMOGRAPHS
Homographs* = words that are spelled the exact same, but have different meanings + sometimes different pronunciations.
Think: same “graph” = same “writing/spelling”.
*2 types:*
1. *Same spelling + same pronunciation* → meaning changes by context
Examples
*Bank*: “I sat on the river bank” vs “I went to the bank to deposit money”
*Bat*: animal that flies vs thing you use in baseball
2. *Same spelling + different pronunciation* → called “heteronyms” too
Examples
*Lead* = a metal. *Lead* = to guide someone
*Tear* = rip paper. *Tear* = drop from your eye
*Wind* = air. *Wind* = twist a rope[led][leed][teer][tare][wind][wynd]
*Quick trick to remember*:
Homograph = HOMO “same” + GRAPH “write” → Same writing, different sense
