History, the study of our past, only tells us part of the story. Our cultural memory, the stories we tell about that past, shape us and our world far more than the strictly accurate historical facts. And that’s where “feral history” comes in – looking at the wild flow of our collective memory and self-image as a civilization through the stories we tell.
And science fiction, because it presents itself as not being about us and our past but someone else in the future, is in many ways the purest distillation of our who we are and how we see ourselves and the world. It’s there that we can find some of what eludes us in purely academic historical study.
Also, I'm just going to say there's a blanket spoiler warning for the entire channel.
And of course, check out Stellar Drift and Ninti's Gate. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GTVXK4CN

This week’s video needed a partial reshoot so I’m sitting in the woods, talking to trees and passing turkeys about the socio-economics of a shoot-the-aliens book. Be back next Friday, until then I wish you all a good weekend . . . Even the haters I suppose, they need a break too.

Taking this week off, but there's new videos on the way. Some of them obvious (of course I'm going to talk about Star Trek next week) and some of them . . . things you probably haven't heard of.
Also, I'm about halfway through Legend of the Galactic Heroes. We're gonna talk about that . . .

I bet no one had a Swatt Deeds collaboration on their 2026 projections, but we had a fun talk about Cosmic Horror last week. Which sounds odd and . . . troubled . . . but the Great Cthulhu is coming so why worry? Anyway, check it out for some rambles, laughs, and maybe an insight or two. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4840f...

A few months back this video https://youtu.be/H52OedcjRFA sparked a discussion on the Talking History program. That episode is now live: www.ksmu.org/podcast/talking-history/2026-02-05/sc…
It in turn prompted me to do this video: https://youtu.be/W0w1gB1hC64 covering an aspect that I kinda fumbled on the show.
And that’s a lot of rambling about fascism, myth, and politics so I’ll try to hold off on that . . . at least until the Elleander Morning video is ready in a few weeks.

No video this week, but back on schedule next week with a look at a classic of libertarian sci-fi. Libertarians and Marxists alike will have things to grouse at me about over this one.

Damo’s latest is an important entry in the ongoing discussion of the slow apocalypse we’re living through. I recommend it. (The video, not the relentless decline into ruin)

So I ended up in Detroit , but I'm back now and will try to catch up on comments and messages before this Friday's video that will surely provoke . . . completely calm and rational discussion.

A while back I had a conversation with Ross and Ryan over at the History on Film podcast. We talked about Star Trek VI, Children of Men, and Gattaca within the context of the "End of History" shows.acast.com/the-history-on-film-podcast
