Named by History
Every German surname started somewhere: a trade, a village, a father or an oath. Most families forgot the story. The records didn't.
Named by History goes back to the original German sources and tells the story of one name at a time, from its first written appearance to the people who carry it in America today.

Hey, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for every view, every comment, every surname you've shared. Even when I can't reply to each one right away. I'm working on keeping up, I promise.
We're almost at 1000 subscribers, and honestly, the best part has been the surnames and stories you've been sharing in the comments. Some of them I had never heard before and a few sent me straight down a research rabbit hole.
The newest video is live right now: the richest American families in history, and the German surnames behind their fortunes. Some of these names you see on buildings every day without knowing where they came from.

So let's keep it going. Tell us where you're watching from and drop the surname you'd like decoded. Any name, any origin. I decode some right here in the replies and the most requested names go on the list for future videos.
Thank you for being here from the start.
