I find HBO Asia's subtitles really annoying; couldn't they just stick with the old format instead of constantly shifting them?

According to the website for The Cat In The Hat, the film was scheduled to be released in IMAX in North America on November 6, 2026. However, it's possible they dropped the IMAX option for Godzilla Minus Zero and Ramayana.

Imagine what it would be like if it were shown in IMAX!

MOVIES PLUS REVIEW
THE CAT IN THE HAT (2026)

Rating: 9/10 — GOOD

The Cat in the Hat (2026) brings Dr. Seuss's iconic character into a brand-new animated adventure, expanding the imaginative world of the original story while introducing a fresh narrative for a new generation of audiences.

At the centre of the film is the Cat, a mischievous and unpredictable character whose latest assignment is to bring happiness and imagination into the lives of two siblings, Gabby and Sebastian, who are having difficulty adjusting to their new home and surroundings. What initially appears to be a relatively straightforward mission gradually develops into a much bigger adventure, filled with unexpected situations, magical experiences and plenty of chaos.

STORY & SCREENPLAY
One of the film's most interesting aspects is its decision to explore the Cat in the Hat beyond the familiar pages of Dr. Seuss's classic children's book. Rather than simply recreating the original story, the filmmakers introduce a wider world, including the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration (I.I.I.I.), which provides additional background to the Cat's character and his unusual profession.

The relationship between the Cat and the two siblings gives the story its emotional foundation. Gabby and Sebastian are dealing with the challenges of moving to a new town, leaving behind familiar places and adjusting to a different environment. Through their interactions with the Cat, the film explores how imagination, friendship and a positive outlook can help children face unfamiliar experiences.

The screenplay successfully combines comedy, fantasy and family-oriented storytelling. Although the adventure becomes increasingly chaotic, its underlying message remains meaningful: sometimes, the things we need most are not grand adventures or extraordinary experiences, but understanding, encouragement and the feeling that we are not alone.

CHARACTERS & VOICE PERFORMANCES
The Cat in the Hat is undoubtedly the highlight of the film. His energetic personality, mischievous behaviour and unconventional approach to solving problems make him an entertaining central character. Bill Hader brings considerable personality to the role, capturing the Cat's enthusiasm, humour and unpredictable nature.

Xochitl Gomez and Tiago Martinez also contribute to the emotional side of the story through their portrayals of Gabby and Sebastian. Their characters provide a more grounded perspective, balancing the Cat's exaggerated personality and the increasingly fantastical situations surrounding them.

The supporting voice cast further enriches the film, helping create a colourful collection of characters who contribute to its comedic and imaginative atmosphere.

ANIMATION & VISUAL PRESENTATION
Visually, the film embraces the imaginative spirit associated with Dr. Seuss. Its colourful environments, unusual character designs and creative fantasy sequences help establish a distinctive animated world.

The visual presentation is particularly important because imagination is not simply an element of the story; it is one of the central ideas behind the entire adventure. The different environments and visual styles give the film opportunities to express the creativity of its characters while keeping the audience engaged throughout the journey.

The animation also complements the Cat's personality. His movements, expressions and exaggerated reactions contribute significantly to the comedy, making many of the film's moments enjoyable to watch.

Beyond its comedy and fantasy elements, The Cat in the Hat carries several meaningful messages about family, friendship, imagination and adapting to change.

The story reminds audiences that moving forward is not always easy, particularly when we have to leave behind places, people and memories that are important to us. However, new experiences can also bring opportunities for personal growth and unexpected friendships.

Another meaningful aspect is the importance of understanding children and recognising their feelings. Sometimes, what they need is not someone telling them everything will be fine, but someone willing to listen, encourage them and help them discover happiness again.

The film also celebrates imagination as a powerful part of childhood. It encourages audiences to remain curious, creative and open to possibilities, even when everyday life becomes difficult.

Overall, The Cat in the Hat (2026) is an enjoyable animated adventure that successfully introduces a new interpretation of Dr. Seuss's beloved character. Its combination of comedy, imaginative storytelling, colourful animation and meaningful family themes makes it a memorable viewing experience.

What I appreciate most is the emotional idea behind the adventure. Beneath all the mischief and chaos, the film reminds us that imagination can bring people closer together, help us overcome difficult changes and make unfamiliar situations feel a little less frightening.

While the story takes a much bigger approach than the original book, its central message about friendship, family and the importance of bringing happiness to others gives the adventure a meaningful foundation.

For me, this is a movie that offers more than just Laughs and visual entertainment. It is a reminder that even the smallest moments of kindness, creativity and understanding can make a difference in someone's life. I really hope to see it on HBO Asia and HBO Max Asia next year!

FINAL RATING: 9/10 — GOOD
A colourful, imaginative and heartwarming adventure that gives the Cat in the Hat a new opportunity to entertain audiences and remind us of the importance of imagination.
