The PNW Tree Doctor

Welcome to PNW Tree Doctor!

If you're trying to grow Japanese maple trees in containers - I have a collection of videos for you.

I've spent over a decade growing, collecting, and caring for Japanese maples and other ornamental trees.

I'm here to share what I've learned along the way.

On this channel you will find practical hands-on information about pruning, planting, repotting, soil health, watering, preventative care, and understanding how trees respond to their growing environments.

My goal is to help people better understand their trees, avoid common mistakes, and learn how to keep them healthy for years to come. I believe understanding why we do something is just as important as knowing how to do it and what the outcome might be.

I'm always learning myself, so I enjoy sharing my experiences, observations, and knowledge with others who share the same passion.

Thanks for joining me on this journey, I'll see you in the next video!

The PNW Tree Doctor

Anyone who's been working with trees for years knows that just when we feel like we figured something out - a tree can respond differently than we ever expected it to.

We can manage soil, water, proper pruning, and growing conditions, but we cannot control every environmental variable influencing a tree.

The one thing I've always loved about trees is that no matter whether you have been doing horticultural work for 30 years or whether you're just getting started in it - there's never a point in science where one should become content with "everything" they've done or know.

Most problems start when we become so convinced of an opinion that we stop considering what we might not know could be true.

There's nothing wrong with having strong opinions.

One thing I always consider is that the moment I place myself in a category of "there's nothing left to learn", all I've done then is set a limit on my own understanding of things.

Trees have a way of showing me that no matter how long I've been watching them grow and trying to understand how to maintain their shape/aesthetics with all of the uncontrolled variables - even with what I can control. There's no way to know everything about trees as they're constantly changing with their surroundings and environment.

What if “work” is what you do in your free time—is that really considered work?

The danger is when “I do this because I love it” slowly turns into “Now I can’t stop doing this because everyone and everything depends on it.”

That’s when enjoyable work can start feeling like a chore or just another job.

All I’m saying is try to find something you love to do and stick with it.

Here’s a representation of something I choose to do with my free time.

The PNW Tree Doctor

I've been building quite the collection of Japanese maple videos over the last 5 months. I'm curious what other tree subjects or tree information you'd be interested in learning about.

Making these videos tests my knowledge and forces me to explain concepts and ideas I've practiced for years but never really had to put into words or find a way to capture on video to share with an audience. Sometimes I feel like I spend way too much time trying to understand trees and the environment around them on a deeper level than I ever really needed to — but I do really enjoy it. I am always willing to try new things and share what did and didn't work for me, the results I got, and why.

I don't just have a decade of experience growing my own Japanese maples — I also have over a decade of general tree knowledge, pattern recognition, the local PNW environment, and experience working around trees in some way, shape or form since middle school.

If there's a tree topic, problem, species, pruning question, soil/root issue, or concept you'd like me to cover about trees, let me know.

Thanks for watching the channel and sharing your thoughts with me. I really appreciate it.

The environmental stresses are causing the trees in my region to struggle more than I've ever seen or documented in my life. I've been researching this specifically for a few years now. I'm interested to know if you guys would like to know some of what I've learned because I'd love to make a video and share it all with you all
