I sympathize with those Christians who, in the midst of their affliction, ask “How long must I suffer?” That was certainly David’s repeated question in Psalm 13.

When you remember that God ultimately sends adversity to us in wisdom and love, you start to establish the parameters of the answer: as long as is necessary, but no longer than will do you the most ultimate good.

In the midst of your latest groan, dear friend, look up yet again. The ear of heaven has not turned you away. It never will and never could. Nothing can separate you from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“Cast your burden upon the LORD, and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” (Psalms 55:22)

The weak preaching of our age, ostensibly done to help so-called “seekers” become acquainted with Christ and the church, is precisely the wrong strategy to do good to their souls.

I won’t quibble over whether it can attract a crowd. Obviously, it can.

But that means nothing. Crowds will gather around clowns in multi-colored apparel in a parade. The guy waving from the car isn’t helping their souls, now is he?

The size of the audience says nothing about the value of the message.

Experiential, relational preaching full of personal anecdotes and humor not only does no eternal good; it positively harms souls by hiding redemptive truth from them. It makes men and women think the gospel is something other than it really is.

It is a false gospel. It is cheap entertainment in the name of Almighty Christ. It brings eternal anathema.

We must preach Scripture deeply and communicate doctrine about God and His holiness, sin and judgment, Christ and atonement, repentance and faith, sanctification and glorification.

Those are theological themes of no interest to the carnal man. It’s a message literally from another world. But we must preach these very things clearly, patiently, and repeatedly over time.

We must, you hear?

We must. Otherwise, we will stand in shame before Christ at the end of time and be judged for our active participation in the eternal ruin of eternal souls who believed and trusted the false message that came from our lips.

True men of God do not preach to become popular among unregenerate men. We are not their hirelings. We are meant to be God’s heralds of His truth.

I close this post with the words of Martyn Lloyd-Jones (Romans vol. 3, p. 31):

“Ah but, you say, that will not appeal to people today.  They are not interested in theology.”

The answer is that they must become interested in theology. They must hear the truth and must believe it. Men have never been interested in theology and never will be, until the Holy Spirit deals with them. So our business is to preach the truth to them, trusting to the Holy Spirit to open their eyes and their understanding and to apply it to them with power.”

One thing I would say (among many others) to a young man considering ministry.

You need to settle in your heart ahead of time to live by conviction. It’s the only thing that will sustain you over the long haul.

Lots of so-called Christians will support you as long as you do and say what they want.

Cross them, and you find the reality that was there under the surface all along.
But you’re not a hireling. You’re not going into ministry to be popular. You go as an under shepherd of the One who was despised and rejected by men.

You do the right thing even if people turn on you when you do. You stay true to God’s Word even if people walk out the door while you’re speaking.

You speak the truth without fear or favor of man. You do the right thing and let the Great Shepherd take care of the consequences.

As John MacArthur said, a life in ministry is about making friends and then losing friends as you assert and defend God’s truth and bring accountability to the people under your pastoral care.

Understanding that in advance will steel your determination when the waves crash onto your shore.

So, young man, live by this credo if the Lord places you in local church ministry:
People come.

People go.

I stay.

And as you live by that conviction, there’s a pastor on Facebook here who will be supporting you and cheering you on as you do.

Run the race with courage, my brother.

“But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:5).

My friends, it almost seems futile to make this post, because it essentially is a whisper in the wind. But perhaps a few will get the point and join me in seeking our sovereign God in prayer.

I’m alluding to multiple matters here, all within the past two years. It’s easy to miss the overarching pattern as news cycles come and go.

We literally have children killing parents and parents killing children in our society, in addition to the ongoing holocaust of abortion. In a similar vein, so many children are defenseless victims of adult anger and lust.

That’s evidence of a gross depravity, and frankly, the manifest wrath of God on us. We are in the midst of the wrath of abandonment, and that’s a wretched place to be (Romans 1:18-32).

But it’s worse than that.

Ascendant in the professing church of Christ is a renewed fascination with politics, as if the right conservative leaders could introduce righteousness by legislative decree.
Politics has no such power over the human heart. It’s so much foolishness.

Other churches haven’t gone down that route, but they are so man-centered in their approach that there’s no power there, either.

But the thing that is most disturbing is that the circles that supposedly preach the Word of God have so corrupted themselves. National leaders have disqualified themselves left and right. The very men who upheld the doctrine that I myself believe and teach have made a mockery of ministry with their sin and hypocrisy.

Public image masks a lack of private integrity.

You see, the only—and I mean the only—thing that can revive our destitute land is the gospel of Christ, which is the power of God to salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16-17).

But when the open leaders of Christian ministry have made ministry itself a laughingstock and cause of reproach, if the fountain itself is polluted, what then?

God help us, my friends. We don’t need replacement men to do replacement conferences and double down on the wretched culture that magnified the cesspool of preexisting sin in leadership hearts.

Let judgment and repentance start with the house of God. We need private groans of repentant prayer and humble pleas for reviving mercies to the omnipotent Lord of the church—not the slick, professional voices of another iteration of men who profess godliness but deny its power.

Christian business as usual got us here.

Christian business as usual won’t get us out.

When the people of God are flocking to prayer meetings by the thousands, you’ll know that God is opening a window of mercy.

But when prayer is weak, and instead people flock by thousands to hyped up conferences with the latest and best speakers who can attract a crowd, as we have been doing for a generation now, we can only expect the evil decline to continue.

If conferences were the answer, we would be trending up after all these years.
We are trending down. Make the connection.

Christ was not crucified to create a theme for destination amusement parks or Big Speaker events. You can’t read basic history of martyrs burned at the stake, or Scottish Covenanters gathering in bogs for worship, and think we are continuing the heritage we have received from the smoldering ashes and courageous resistance of our spiritual ancestors.

Someone rent a bulldozer and shove all the conference and venue swag into the landfill.

Dear God, have mercy on us and revive us.

Our shame is on open display for all who have eyes to see.

1. We do not yet have the shipment to begin sending out orders. But it has arrived in the US from the overseas printer. I was able to expedite the process yesterday. It may still be the end of September before we have our hands on them. We will not delay when we do, for I am as eager for you to have the book as you are to receive it.

It seems that so much parenting material is addressed to parents with young children. It is difficult that there is not as much on adult relationships, and even more difficult that the material that is available tends toward the superficial. People need real help.

Scripture gives meaningful help. The message below will give you balanced clarity from God’s Word.

As I have taken to saying lately in interviews and private settings: love is a voluntary activity. You cannot *make* your children love you with a genuine and spontaneous affection.

But all is not lost. Christ can help you sort out the pain and give you a path forward when they don’t. I know humble believers who know contentment in the midst of their rejection.

There’s no reason why you can’t be another one alongside them.

I am completely sympathetic to hurting parents. There is no pain like kid pain. I will tell you the truth, but I will not scold or blame you in my resources. I reach out my hand to help. God bless you.
