πŸ•―οΈ RIP Michael Gray (1951-2026)
Saturday morning lost one of its original heroes.

Michael Gray β€” Billy Batson himself from Filmation's 1974 Shazam! β€” passed away October 16th in Palm Desert from natural causes. He was 75.

I received word of his passing late, since it was announced October 22nd.

For a whole generation of '70s kids, he was Billy β€” riding around in that RV with Mentor, shouting SHAZAM! and turning into Captain Marvel every Saturday morning. Gray took a teenage sidekick role and made it sincere, kind, and unforgettable.

I broke down why that show was such a lightning-charged beautiful mess here:

Rest easy, Billy. Say the word one more time for us.

πŸ•―οΈ RIP Tom Skerritt

(1933-2026)Hollywood lost one of its steadiest character anchors this week.Skerritt passed away on October 21 from natural causes at age 93.

From Captain Dallas in Alien, to Viper in Top Gun, to Sheriff Brock in Picket Fences β€” he was the kind of actor who made every cast he was in feel more grounded.

Pulp Vision trivia:Did you know before all that, he guest-starred in Kolchak: The Night Stalker as an ambitious politician who made a deal with the devil?

"The Devil's Platform" (1974) β€” Skerritt plays Robert Palmer, a rising political star whose campaign is literally powered by a Satanic pact. This episode forshadowed the OMEN films years earlier. We're talking a fatal elevator "accident" for his opponent, mind-controlled attack dogs, and Kolchak caught right in the middle of it trying to prove it.It's one of the wildest political-horror episodes 70s TV ever attempted.I covered it in my deep dive exhuming the BEST episodes of Kolchak β€” you can watch it here:

You remember the theme songs. You blocked out how absolutely unhinged Saturday morning really was. Cheap animation, toy-commercial plots, heroes that got sued out of existence β€” I'm exhuming all of it in one playlist: Filmation's DC universe, Space Ghost, Blackstar, Super Friends chaos, Marvel's first cartoons and more.

Binge the haunting here:

Before the MCU, CBS had Marvel first β€” and k*lled it on purpose.Spider-Man. The Hulk. Doctor Strange. Captain America. All on one network. All gone by 1979.

So after rummaging through my photos I happened to find this sketch I drew five years ago. Plus someone on my previous thread, gave a shout out to one of Saturday morning's most Iconic Superhero.
I think it's time he get his well-deserved treatment.

Y'know, I've been sitting on something. While Pulp Vision has always been the house of forgotten TV β€” the cartoons and shows the networks buried.

There's a whole graveyard I've barely touched: the movies. So I built another room in the house. It's called Celluloid SΓ©ance β€” and it's exactly what it sounds like. Every Thursday, a deep dive into the banned, the forgotten, and the beautiful disasters of cinema the studios paid to forget. Ten minutes or more, no filler, all killer and I got the receipts.

The sΓ©ance began on Thursday with the 1974 Street Fighter β€” the Sonny Chiba martial-arts picture so violent, America's censors literally banned it. First movie in U.S. history to get an X rating for violence alone.

If you've ever watched one of my TV autopsies and thought "man, I'd watch him do this to a movie" β€” today's your day. Link in the pinned comment. πŸ”—

Despite being portrayed as one of Marvel’s greatest supervillains, Victor Von Doom has occasionally had a rather unexpected ambition: ending world hunger.

In Emperor Doom, Doom actually accomplishes itβ€”and he even mentions ending hunger in the final episode of the 1995 Fantastic Four animated series. Yes, Doctor Doom has committed his fair share of atrocities, but there’s something oddly fascinating about a supervillain whose vision of world domination includes making sure people don’t starve.

And then there’s Elon Musk, whose decisions have been criticized for contributing to cuts affecting aid to vulnerable and starving populations.

So, Elon… you’re no Doctor Doom.

Doom may be a tyrant, but at least the man has compassion.

You? You’re not Doom. You’re just evil without the cool armor.

Maxwell Lord's face didn't come from nowhere.

When Maguire, DeMatteis, and Giffen designed their smooth-talking, morally ambiguous power broker for Justice League #1 in 1987, they were looking at someone specific. Sam Neill. The 1980s version β€” sharp features, coiled intelligence, the faint smirk of a man who had already read the room and quietly found it disappointing. It was perfect casting for a character who was never quite a villain, never quite a hero, and was absolutely going to cause problems either way.Sam Neill spent his career making audiences uneasy in the most entertaining ways possible.

The Antichrist as a composed TV statesman. A psychopath on a yacht with nowhere to be. A man unraveling inside a Stephen King novel. And then, standing in a field, looking up at something that shouldn't exist β€” and selling every second of it.He brought intelligence to material that didn't always deserve it.

He never condescended to genre. He took the work seriously even when the work involved running from things with too many teeth.Maxwell Lord smiled like a man who already knew the ending.Turns out, so did Sam Neill who should have been cast as Lord in Wonder Woman 84, but in hindsight, he was spared from that abomination of a sequel.
