Matsutake Hunt - the arrival :)
What a beautiful day today with the Los Angeles Mycological Society members! We started out with an uplifting hike from Castle Lake to Heart Lake. Inspired by one of our most courageous members, we even climbed beyond the trail’s end onto the steep cliffs of the mountain behind Heart Lake to see how the lake got its name. It truly is shaped like a heart! :) 🤍

On the way up, we saw many wonderful, familiar beings: gentle Jeffrey pines, mountain maples, serviceberry and elderberry shrubs. Yet, each time we take this familiar path, it reveals new depths and layers. Today was no different. My fellow travelers noticed bearberries—which I had no idea even existed, they are actually delicious —and huckleberry oaks with
tiny acorns dressed in neat little caps. A mountain ash tree that apparently carries berries that some people like to eat. Wow, who knew? To think I have passed by all of them so many times!
Later brought another surprise along a familiar path, a day before the official foray: bam—Matsutake mushrooms!

Pair that with a breathtaking sunset, new friendships, and a delicious shared meal after a full day of exploring… And this was just the arrival :)

Huckleberry pancakes 🥞😋

Thank you for a fantastic recommendation radianthealth! The berries are such a refreshing addition to the dish, they burst with juicy sour goodness cutting right through the sweetness of the pancakes and together, this makes for one top notch flavor dance - we are in heaven here!

Very thankful for all of your tips and recommendations and support, guys. Hope you all have an awesome Sunday!

By the way, got this pancake recipe from allrecipes.com It was contributed by Dakota Kelly and it makes the fluffiest pancakes! Thank you Dakota for sharing :)

Huckleberry Pancake recipe

Sift together dry ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- a pinch of salt

Add these wet ingredients to the dry ones and mix well
- 1 large egg
- 3 Tablespoons melted butter
- 1 1/4 cup milk

+ Huckleberries! Or any other berries you can forage in the forest or your local grocery story (just no blueberries please 🤣, try something new!).

+ Maple syrup when ready. I highly recommend Passamaquoddy maple 🍁- it is worth the wait! www.passamaquoddymaple.com/
While you’re at it, make sure to order the $5 bag of maple lozenges actually, order 2 bags if you want to have any for yourself, because there will be a line of kids to you door :)
