Heavy metals found in up to 90% of cat food brands

While I agree that most commercial cat food brands are garbage… We still need to be careful about these “reports” and “lab results”.

Clean Label Project (CLP) published a report that found heavy metals in up to 99% of cat food products tested across 62 brands. Every news outlet is covering this so I won’t waste time talking about what you’ve already read.

Instead, let’s do some digging…

Under “Our Testing Methodology” it states “Testing was performed by an independent analytical chemistry laboratory…” with a link to Ellipse Analytics, the independent lab.

Clean Label Project lists Sean Callan as their Chief Science Officer on their website. Guess what his LinkedIn profile says? He’s the CEO of Ellipse Analytics. Interesting! I thought the point of saying “independent lab” was to show people that there is no affiliation between the two companies?

CLP does actually list the brands and products that they tested in the PDF report at the bottom of the page. But they don’t offer any data on each individual product. The only charts and graphs they provide show what was tested and the amounts found overall across all products. There is no specific data for each individual product. That’s the most important part!

10 years ago, CLP posted to Reddit to introduce themselves, their results from a previous pet food report, and said they would answer any questions that people had.

Most comments asked for the details on each individual product. We want to see the results from the report…

CLP said they want to be as transparent as possible, but their concern is liability: “From a legal standpoint it doesn't matter that we didn't generate the data. By providing raw values to the public, we open ourselves up to legal action from large corporations with far more resources and way more lawyers. Even if our data are 100% correct, 100% of the time, that process would be a financial strain we might not be able to handle.” - quote from their comment.

As a few people point out in the comments:

“Yet you publish your interpretation of the data without any proof whatsoever backing your big claims. That is a much larger liability. Do you at least see how from our perspective your whole operation is looking suspect?”

“Yeah, it seems like less of a liability to publish the data and not draw subjective conclusions (like the star rating system) than doing what you have done, conclusions with nothing to back them up.”

“What liability are you concerned about? Assuming you had a sound methodology for the entire experiment, and the lab is valid and sound in their testing, what does that leave you with? Honestly, I see more liability in rating brands without releasing any sourcing. I mean depending on how you structured this, I could see defamation if you DIDN'T run the experiment with a sound scientific backing.”

People also asked where did funding come from? CLP responded, “Clean Label Project received the data as a generous donation from Ellipse Analytics. As to how CLP funds itself, we rely on donations from concerned consumers, grant writing, and a new certification program that uses our logo at point of sale.”

Ah the “independent” lab, Ellipse Analytics!

Also, on their website FAQ page “How is CLP funded?” they state, “Clean Label Project is supported through a mix of donations, grants, and certification fees from brands that display the CLP mark on products that have been independently tested and evaluated to meet our standards.”

I’m glad to see that healthier options are included in their “clean sixteen” lists. But then they also put Hill’s and Fancy Feast as clean foods. Maybe they don’t have high levels of heavy metals. But I definitely wouldn’t consider them clean from an ingredient and nutritional standpoint.
