Farewell to an absolut legend in the lion world

Loonkito, the oldest wild living male lion of the world, had died yesterday at the grand old age of 19 years. As the Lion Guardian writes „he was a symbol of resilience and coexistence“. An extraordinary life that was lived to the absolute fullest. We salute and pay our respect to a lion whose survival skills have not only exceeded every possible standard but will remain unparalleled for the years to come. A legend of Amboseli.

We say our farewell to Nairobis two iconic brothers Sam and Cheru who were the faces of the Nairobi National Park for many years.

After Cheru disappeared in December 2019 Sam kept going as the Kingfisher pride male for another 8 months till he met his demise in the morning as a result of a serious fight with another lion. He was found in a weak condition, with many infected bite wounds on the back and a major wound on his face, unable to move. The vets tried but could not save him, he passed away at the vets department at the old age of 15 years.

Sam & Cheru had ruled the Nairobi National Park for the last 8 years and leave behind a legacy unrivaled in the park.

As one of the photographers who followed the two boys closely over the last years we want to close with a touching quote of Paras Chandaria:

„There are no goodbyes. Wherever you’ll be, you’ll be in my heart. I’m mourning and celebrating the time we shared together. Your life was a gift to the world.“
