According to FTVLive, KABB’s longest tenured talent, chief meteorologist Alex Garcia, there since day one in 1995, and sports director Chuck Miketinac also there for the same time, were let go Wednesday. This is due to Sinclair Broadcasting making budget cuts. Neither were given the opportunity to say goodbye despite their 30 years of service to the station and even longer in the market in general as both came from KENS when KABB was building up its news.
Both were present Tuesday night but were suspiciously missing from the Wednesday newscast. Usual fill in meteorologist Siobhan Anders covered weather Wednesday while reporter Destany Fuller did sports. Neither one said that they were “in for Alex/Chuck”.
At this point I don’t know why the company still pays for separate anchors for one show on KABB, doesn’t seem like a wise use of financial resources if the company is hurting that badly.
Sad to see local news continue to become irrelevant, both with the general public not really watching it and the companies not investing and giving people a reason to watch. And just unacceptable these veterans were not allowed to at least give a goodbye, unlike two years ago when KSAT did the same thing (but “layoffs” versus “buyout” you’ll say, even if they ultimately accomplish the same goal.
And since Alex and Chuck have been constant presences on local news since I was a kid, once again another part of my childhood gone like that…

This industry just can’t catch a break! Today, the FCC announced it was repealing the 39% national coverage cap for local TV station ownership today. The move was widely expected by the current chairman. The vote was approved along party lines. As you may know, the FCC is down two commissioners and there’s no plan by the current administration to fill the other two seats, since the current makeup allows his party’s priorities to be pushed through.
Do I think the FCC has the authority to make the change? No. And this will definitely end up in a court.
Do I think it should happen? I mean the FCC has already played fast and loose with it for a while such as the UHF discount to the point I don’t think it’s necessary anymore, but I do believe companies should not be allowed to buy competing newsrooms in all but the smallest markets. Buying your competitors for the sole purpose of eliminating them is not a good business strategy, and that is what needs to be stopped. As much as I hate most large chain broadcasters, if they want to be in all 210 markets, let them.

This business continues to get more depressing to follow each day. Some days I question why I still bother, it’s painful watching the death of an industry I once loved in real time.
Case in point: Scripps is the next large company to announce large scale layoffs in an attempt to address declining revenue. My heart goes out to those affected.

KNBN finally makes its statement that it’s adding CBS on Saturday. It is word for word identical to what Hearst has run on their stations. Haven’t seen anything mentioned on air yet.

Your thoughts on AI generated graphics on this channel…
I’ve experimented with them a couple times. If you know me, you know how I feel about them. But I still wanted to test the waters, and in the case of the KDNL losing ABC post made the other day, I needed something done quickly since I didn’t have time to make something on the computer by hand. I agree, human generated graphics will always look better than anything AI can spit out.
I got enough comments calling me out on my post about it.
That being said: how do you feel? Are you in favor of AI graphics, indifferent, or do you absolutely loathe them?

More breaking news! ABC is leaving KDNL after 31 years and going to the subchannel of KMOV. The move takes place September 1st.
Personally I think it is a good move because KDNL has been one of the network’s worst affiliates with its lack of news, marketing, and compelling programs outside of the network.

Breaking news! A handful of Nexstar stations will be leaving CBS at the end of the month. Hearst and Forum stand to be the beneficiaries in the affected markets. I heard a couple rumors about KRQE leaving CBS from Reddit and FTV Live but turns out more stations will be affected than previously thought. RBR+TVBR picks it up from here.

A preliminary injunction has officially been issued Friday night in the Nexstar-Tegna merger. Nexstar promises to appeal. Latest from Deadline: deadline.com/2026/04/nexstar-tegna-merger-blocked-…
Just the facts above. My opinion: this is a good first step but the fight is not over. The worst part of all this is it drags this out possibly for months or years which sucks because it leaves a lot of these employees in continued limbo and they should never be in this situation. This could have all been avoided if Nexstar didn’t rush to close the transaction (which apparently they needed to do because Bank of America gave them a deadline or they were going to impose a penalty) and divested more conflict markets.
