“Network more” is some of the most useless career advice. Network with WHO?

I don’t want you going to random networking events and trying to meet as many people as possible.

I’d rather you identify the companies you genuinely want to work for, then find a few people who have already done what you want to do.

Study how they got there. Look at their background. See who you already know who might connect you. Then reach out thoughtfully.

But notice what has to happen before any of that works: You have to know what you’re looking for.

It’s very hard to build the right relationships when your job search is basically “I’m open to anything.”

As a hiring manager myself, I wish more people spent less time rehearsing the perfect interview answers and more time figuring out what the hiring manager actually needs:
– What problems are they trying to solve?
– Why are they hiring for this role?
– What would make someone exceptional at it?

If you understand those things before you walk into the interview, you don’t have to spend the whole time trying to guess what they want to hear. You can show them how you’d actually help.
