Lt Gen Sagat Singh, PVSM: The General Who Never Lost a War

From the liberation of Goa to the defence of Nathu La and the decisive operations of the 1971 Bangladesh War, Lt Gen Sagat Singh, PVSM remains one of the most remarkable and unconventional commanders in the history of the Indian Army.

In this episode, we trace the extraordinary journey of a soldier who rose from humble beginnings to become a legendary battlefield commander.

In 1961, during Operation Vijay, Brigadier Sagat Singh and 50 Para Brigade advanced into Goa, overcoming mines, roadblocks and river obstacles to become the first Indian formation to reach Panaji.

In 1967, at Nathu La, Maj Gen Sagat Singh stood firm when Chinese forces challenged Indian positions. His decisive leadership and use of artillery during the confrontation helped restore confidence in the Indian Army after the setback of 1962.

But his defining achievement came in 1971.

As Commander of IV Corps, Lt Gen Sagat Singh, PVSM, played a crucial role in the Indian advance towards Dhaka. With the massive Meghna River standing in the way, he recognised an opportunity that could change the course of the campaign — using Mi-4 helicopters to airlift troops, weapons and supplies across the river.

The Meghna Heli Bridge became one of the most remarkable operations of the 1971 war. Thousands of troops and vital equipment were rapidly moved across the river, allowing Indian forces to advance towards Dhaka with unprecedented speed.

On 16 December 1971, Pakistan’s forces surrendered in East Pakistan, leading to the birth of Bangladesh.

This is the story of a commander who saw opportunities where others saw obstacles, took calculated risks, challenged conventional thinking and repeatedly led from the front.

Lt Gen Sagat Singh, PVSM — a soldier, a strategist and a commander who helped change the course of history.
