Say hello to Gary Tully. He’s yet another of TPEs assessors who’ve afforded you a view out of the front window. It was November 2022 when I filmed the run from Newcastle to Edinburgh and back and you’ve seen the northbound trip but I’ve been saving the southbound to split them up. After months of planning, we had days of heavy rain and we actually cancelled it but then by some stroke of luck, a one day hole appeared and it gave us a day to grab superb footage. It’s 124.5 miles of often breathtaking scenery and another section of the ECML into our collection. I’ll keep you updated on progress.
We take an ultra modern Class 802 where classic icons once went. From Hull we go west to Temple Hirst Junction then for a fast run down the East Coast Main Line to London Kings Cross. It's a fabulous October day and the massive wiper/washer is busy giving you a bug clear view so you can enjoy the vista. Simulator Manager Dave Kildea is at the helm and after the initial pick up stops, the train is virtually full. In this direction we coast down Stoke Bank where Mallard once strained to achieve her record of 126mph.
69001 wasn't looking her best when we filmed from Longport to Tuebrook but she was looking as purposeful as ever. I can't imagine how many tonnes of coal she lugged in Ruston Paxman day with that distinctive rumble you could hear a mile away. You can see in the photo that she hasn't been bathed since RHTT duties in the autumn and trust me, finding a clean bit of windscreen to film through was a challenge. You can see Roger giving a once over before we departed. I've set it up to premier on Thursday at 8pm so join in for live chat if you can. PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS NOW WEDNESDAY 13 MAY AT THE SAME TIME.
Join us on Friday 15th of May for a treat especial! We premier another Doug Copley video, this time featuring the mineral lines around Worksop. There's plenty of Type 5 action and Doug gives his inimitable commentary. We will have more Doug Copley premiers coming soon. Jacob Short, Director of Peak Rail will be there for the premier so don't miss it.
You'll get the Longport to Tuebrook Sidings video soon but in the meantime, Peak Rail are premiering their bespoke version of the Nottingham to Matlock/Rowsley to Matlock video on Friday at 20:00 UK time. I'll be on to chat and so will Jacob Short so you can ask questions directly to him. As always, thanks to Mike Clark for the EMR footage.
Will Castledine at TfW has been in touch to say a number of drivers are doing a 3 Peaks Walk for The Railway Children so good luck to them. You might like to enter their raffle for a go on the Class 197 simulator. Give it a go and see how you get on.
We're on a mission. 70007 is in the cement and stone terminal at Walsall and has run short of coolant. In that case, you don't risk it failing completely on the return journey, the best course of action is to send out an assisting locomotive - 70016. We run down as 0Z99 which is a standard headcode for assisting locomotive. It's a clear run down to Rugeley and then we scoot down the Chase Line to Walsall. On the way back we pick up 6M82 headcode for our 22 brand new MWA wagons so we have those and the double headed Class 70 to make up our train much to the delight of the rail enthusiasts. On return to Basford Hall we get to see right inside the yard where we leave our rescued train. It's 2:50 of crystal clear footage and hi def sound. Premiere Easter Monday 20:00.
The date is 5th January 2026 and we are in the process of returning 6M22 - the Hunslet East (Cross Green) stone train empties back to Tunstead in Derbyshire. The days are short and trip will end near Heaton Norris where we run out of daylight. However, on this fascinating journey on a cracking winter afternoon, we will see much of the westbound TRU progress and talk about the wonderful Standedge Tunnel.
It's April 2022 and we follow. this trip from Dagenham to Bedford via what is known as the GOBLIN (Gospel Oak to Barking Line). Our train of JPA cement tanks has been unloaded and will make its way back to Earle's (Hope) works in Derbyshire. It's a fascinating run around the North London Line at rooftop level on one of the many elevated sections in the country that were built to save crossing dozens of streets on the level. After circumnavigating London, we join the Midland Main Line and have a good run north to Bedford. There's lots to discuss on the way.
