A mother was told to put her baby in a river.

So We conveyed to the mother of Moses: "Suckle him. If you are afraid for him, cast him in the river without any fear or regret, for We shall restore him to you, and make him an apostle."
- Qur'an 28:7

In hifz you can know every ayah of a passage on its own and still stall at the join between two.

You know ayah four. You know ayah five. Recite from the top and you stall where one ends and the next begins, because each was learned as its own island.

So once a new ayah is secure, do not stop at it. Recite it again joined to the one before, then once more from a few ayat back, so the transition gets rehearsed as often as the words.

The joins are part of the passage. Memorise them on purpose.

Reading the Qur'an slowly is not falling behind.

Somewhere along the way the page count became the measure. How far you got, how many juz, whether you finished on time. Speed started to feel like sincerity.

A page you read twice, stopping where one word caught you, is not a page you failed to get through. It is the reading working.

Finish when you finish. Understand while you are there.

t-w-b: the Arabic word for repentance means to return.

Tawbah is usually translated as repentance, and in English that word leans almost entirely on regret. The three letters underneath it mean to turn back.

The Qur'an uses the same verb for God. When a person turns back, He is described as turning toward them, and one of His names, At-Tawwab, is built from those letters: the One who turns back to people again and again.

So tawbah is less a verdict on how far you went than a direction. Back.

Try reading one page of the Qur'an together this week. Out loud, taking turns, at whatever pace the slower reader sets.

Two things change. You stop skimming, because somebody is listening and skimming is audible. And it stops being a task you owe yourself, because people are easier to keep appointments with than intentions are.

A spouse. A child still learning the letters. A friend on a call, on speaker, no camera.

Whoever knows the words better helps the other with them. One page, two voices.

Maryam is alone under a date palm, in labour, and wishing out loud that she had died before this.

Then (a voice) called to her from below: "Grieve not; your Lord has made a rivulet gush forth right below you. Shake the trunk of the date-palm tree, and it will drop ripe dates for you.
โ€” Qur'an 19:24-25

Two things are given here, and they arrive by completely different routes. The water is already running. It was under her before the voice spoke, and nothing is asked of her for it.

The dates are not like that. For those she is told to shake the trunk of a palm tree, in the one hour of her life when she is least able to shake anything.

She is not being asked to succeed at it. A woman in labour does not bring down a date palm by pulling on it. The instruction is not an explanation of how the fruit falls โ€” it is an invitation to have a hand in it anyway.

Some of what you need is already running past your feet, and you have not noticed it yet. Some of it will ask you to reach up while you are at your weakest, and it will not be your strength that brings it down.

A translation tells you what the verse means. It does not tell you which Arabic word carried which part of it.

That gap is where most people quietly stall. You have followed the sentence, and you still could not point at the word for mercy in it โ€” or notice that the word you just met is the same one you read in another surah last month, wearing a different English coat.

Word by word opens each word on its own: its meaning, the root it grows from, and the highlight moving with the recitation, so your eye and your ear land on the same word at the same moment.

You stop reading a translation of the Qur'an and start reading the Qur'an with help.

Three mistakes that hide while you read the Qur'an silently:

1. a vowel you have been guessing at for years, and guessing it the same way every time
2. a pause you keep taking in the wrong place
3. a word you have quietly merged with the one after it

Recite aloud to someone who knows the passage, and they stop hiding.

Friday has its own verse:

O you who believe, when the call to prayer is made on the day of congregation, hasten to remember God, putting aside your business. This is better for you if you can understand.

114 surahs. 6,236 ayat.

Al-Baqarah, the longest at 286, sits second. Al-Kawthar, at 3, sits near the end. An-Nas closes the whole book with 6.

The order is not by length, not alphabetical, and not the order of revelation.
