At 47, I don’t look at work the same way I did when I was younger.

I still believe in working hard.
I still believe in being dependable.
And yes, I still work overtime.

But I’ve learned that hard work doesn’t always equal security, a bigger paycheck doesn’t always mean you’re moving forward, and sometimes the things that feel safest can still change overnight.

The older I get, the more I think about time, options, and what all that work is actually building.

These are 5 things I understand differently about work at 47.

I’ve always been the type to take overtime when it’s available. More hours meant more money, so I usually said yes.

But at 47, I’m starting to look at it differently.

The extra money doesn’t seem to go as far as it used to… but the extra hours are still gone once I spend them.

So now I’m asking myself a different question:

Is the overtime actually helping me move forward — or am I just working more?
