Teach Kids to Read - The Active Reader

Simple, research-backed reading lessons for parents of kids ages 3 to 8. One new video every week.

I’m Rebecca, a teacher, Orton-Gillingham reading tutor and mom with more than 15 years of experience. I founded Novel Tutoring and co-founded The Active Reader to help families teach reading the way the science of reading says it works.

On this channel, you’ll learn how to teach letter sounds, blending and phonics at home, build pre-reading skills like rhyming, spot early signs of dyslexia and reading struggles, and choose books that actually help your child read. Teachers will find plenty here too.

Short, practical lessons you can try tonight. No guessing, no memorizing whole words.

Can your child rhyme yet? It sounds like a small thing, but rhyming is one of the earliest clues to how a child will learn to read. In this week's video I share the 30-second rhyme check I use with my students. Try it tonight, then come back and tell me the silliest rhyme your child came up with.

Teach Kids to Read - The Active Reader

Yesterday's video is already resonating with so many parents 📚

Here's the thing that surprised people most: Your laundry pile teaches more phonological awareness than most worksheets. Folding clothes while saying "Ssssock, sssssweater - both start with /s/" is actually structured pre-reading practice.

You're already doing these chores. The shift is just talking differently during them.

Which chore are you going to try this with first? 👇
