📊 $USDJPY — CFTC POSITIONING MATTERS 🕵️‍♂️

Back in June, institutional long positions reached a maximum of 267K contracts. Price continued higher, but there was little room left for institutions to keep adding longs.

Then at the recent highs around 164, long positioning reached another extreme at 264K.

And look what happened next… 💥

Institutions began taking profits, and USD/JPY experienced a significant decline.

This is why extreme CFTC positioning is so important. It doesn't tell us exactly when price will reverse, but it can show us when institutional positioning is becoming stretched.

📈 Longs and shorts are both above average, showing strong activity on both sides.

📉 Shorts are slightly more aggressive, now sitting at 52% exposure.

🔻 Net positioning: -8,000 contracts

This tells us institutions are beginning to shift into bearish territory, though not aggressively yet.

⚠️ Bears are slowly gaining the edge here.

Interesting shift in institutional positioning on the S&P 500.

📈 Over the last 3 weeks, short positions have climbed from roughly 420K to 456K contracts — showing increased bearish exposure.

📉 But context matters…

Short positions previously spiked all the way to 490K before steadily declining to current levels.

At the same time, price pulled back into a major 🟩 demand zone.

This suggests the earlier spike in shorts was likely driven by that selloff into demand rather than fresh aggressive bearish conviction.

👀 Key question now: Will institutions continue reducing shorts from here?
