Today marks one of the most devastating tragedies to be brought upon the United States of America. 19 years ago today, 2,997 people lost their lives in the devastating terrorist attack we all remember as 9/11. Let’s take a moment to remember the people of this day.

Let’s remember the people of Flight 11 who would soon lose their lives as their plane was hijacked to crash into the Northern Twin Tower.

Let’s also remember the people of Flight 175 who would soon lose their lives as their plane was hijacked to crash into the Southern Twin Tower.

Let’s remember the people of Flight 77 who would soon lose their lives as their plane was hijacked to crash into the Pentagon.

Let’s remember the people of Flight 93, who after learning about the previous attacks on the Towers & Pentagon, heroically fought back against the hijackers, which later would prove to save hundreds if not thousands of other lives if the plane was to reach the hijacker’s destination. Sadly, the hijackers pulled the plane down, resulting in the death of all the passengers, crashing in a field located in Somerset, PA.

These passengers were left with nothing but a chance to call their loved ones to say goodbye, knowing of their upcoming fate. We will never truly understand the feeling of hopelessness that these passengers dealt with during their last minutes of life.

Let’s remember the people located in the towers who died instantly when the two planes struck individually. The people who survived the crash to be left with non-working elevators and a blocked stairway, to be trapped with a fire closing in on them. The one’s who jumped out of the windows to avoid being burnt to death and the ones who perished while the towers collapsed.

Let’s remember and appreciate the first responders who heroically gave up their lives in service of saving others. The firemen, police, doctors, EMT’s, etc.

Let’s remember the people who were lucky enough to walk away from that horrific day just to be struck with illnesses like cancer to be brought on by the dust inhalation from that terrible day. So many American lives cut short.

Now as an animal lover I feel we should take a moment to also appreciate the animals that helped serve us during 9/11.

Let’s remember and honor Sirius, a four year old, yellow Labrador Retriever, who lost his life for his country.

Sirius was a member of the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department and worked as an Explosives Detection Dog. He and his partner, Officer David Lim, were assigned to the Port Authority Police Station in the basement of the World Trade Center’s Tower Two, where he worked checking trucks and vehicles for explosives. Sirius became a member of the PAPD after he graduated from the Port Newark K9 Center on 07/15/2000 and wore PAPD Badge #17. Sirius’ owner Lim was with the dog working in the basement of the second tower when they heard the first tower be struck. Lim left Sirius in his kennel promising to return to him once everything was straightened out. As the events of 9/11 played out, Lim was unable to come back for Sirius. While assisting in rescue operations Lim became trapped in a stairwell, along with a grandmother and firefighters from Ladder Company 6, for several hours when Tower I collapsed. Once freed he attempted to return to Sirius in Tower II which was now rubble and inaccessible. Many have come forward and said they heard the moans of pain from Sirius for days as he remained unreachable.

On January 25, 2002 workers at Ground Zero recovered the remains of Sirius. Sirius received full police honors including machines being silenced while everyone at Ground Zero lined up and saluted his body that had been draped with an American flag.

Lim donated items in memory of Sirius that included a training leash and one of Sirius’ badges.

Because of Sirius, hundreds of animals were able to honor him by acting as service animals to the victims of 9/11 who were left to deal with permanent damage, severe depression, PTSD and then so.

Many dogs themselves faced severe depression and PTSD after the attacks of 9/11 from discovering thousands of dead bodies in the aftermath.

The last known dog to be affected and take part in 9/11 passed away in 2016.
