Northern Family Camping

Five firesteels and one knife.

These are the fire-starting tools I currently use in the woods.

This is not a laboratory test, just my personal experience.

From left to right:

1. No-name Chinese ferro rod. It works, but the sparks are not as bright or consistent as with the others. Ferro rods can behave very differently depending on the alloy, heat treatment, diameter, striker and technique.
2. @lightmyfiresweden Swedish FireSteel. Unfortunately, the ferro rod arrived broken, so I cannot properly review the complete set. I kept the striker, though.
3. @primusequipment Primus. A great option with a protective case and a neck lanyard. Unfortunately, the case eventually broke. It already had a small crack when it arrived. The rod is quite thin, so it wears down relatively quickly, but it is still one of my favorite designs.
4. @kupilka_official Firesteel 8. My current favorite. A thick rod, comfortable handle and excellent sparks. I carry it almost everywhere.
5. @morakniv. The ferro rod from my wife’s Mora Eldris, if I remember the model correctly. It is not a standalone firesteel, but an additional part of the knife. Still, it works well and I occasionally borrow it for testing.

The small bag above contains waxed jute cord. You can cut it, pull it apart and use it to catch the first spark. Simple, but very effective tinder.
And at the bottom is my @apollo.blades Gifted knife. I am currently testing it actively. Cutting meat, opening things and handling regular camp tasks, it does all of that without any problems.

Northern Family Camping

For the past few months, this GardePro trail camera has been quietly watching the forest when we were not there.

It captured moose, a hare, boar — and even a wolverine, which was something I honestly never expected to see.

I’ve really enjoyed using the GardePro E8 2.0 Pro, and now it is available as part of the GardePro Prime Day promotion.

June 22 – July 15

Regular price: $109.99

Northern Family Camping

Hey everyone!

I'm working on shaping future content for the channel and I need your input. I've been sharing both family camping adventures with my little one and solo overnight trips that explore the wilderness under the night sky. I’d love to know which type of adventure you enjoy more:

Family camping adventures with a focus on bonding, nature, and fun moments.
Solo overnight trips that dive into the solitude and mystery of the wild.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable and will help me plan the content you love to watch. Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

Happy adventuring!
