๐ŸŒฟ Welcome to Wild JJib! ๐Ÿธ

Hi, Iโ€™m Suzi! A former fashion designer, English teacher, and living sciences, AP Biology, ecology, and wild frog educator turned YouTuber!

Here, I explore tiny wild worlds through animals, bioactive enclosures, DIY, plants, moss, and miniature ecosystems. ๐ŸŒฑ I love bringing nature, creativity, and wonder together.

I believe itโ€™s scarier not to try than to fail and I hope to inspire people.

South Korean researchers developed a special drill inspired by a tiny insect called the acorn weevil, which naturally drills into hard acorns using its extraordinary mouthparts!

Today I picked a few Oak nut acorns from the park and planted them in a small container. Do you think Iโ€™ll find an acorn weevil larvae soon?

I read it takes 1-5 years for them to become adults too.

๐Ÿ‚ Happy Mid-Autumn, everybody!

Just a little reminder to keep going, even when life gets difficult. Sometimes, the little things we have to look forward to can make all the difference. ๐Ÿ’›

And I have some exciting news to share! Next year, I may finally have the chance to adopt some Korean thumb lumpfish! Thereโ€™s only one breeder in all of Korea, and if their breeding efforts are successful this year, Iโ€™m already on the list to purchase some in Spring !๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ’•

Iโ€™m so excited at the thought of building a future tank for these adorable little Mini Lumpfish

Hereโ€™s to brighter days, exciting new projects, and all the little things that make life wonderful. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

Have a cute day, everyone! ๐Ÿ’š

Ungatekeeping the trick to taking good videos and photos of your small creatures using your phone. (All of my content is filmed on my iPhone)

All you need is the bottom right clip on macro lens for close up shots of your bug.

The other telemacro lens is more difficult to use and much narrower field of view.

Food for thought:

How is cookie dough similar to leaf litter?

Can you guess the theme of my next Isopod tank?

Tips for people who are raising only a few isopods (less than 5)

With only 3โ€“4 isopods in a small tank, adding an excessive amount of substrate and leaf litter can actually create problems rather than automatically making the enclosure healthier.

๐Ÿ˜ญExcess organic material โ†’ more decomposition and mold, especially when there arenโ€™t enough isopods to consume it.
๐Ÿ’จPoor airflow can make the lower layers stay overly wet, encouraging fungal growth and anaerobic pockets.
๐Ÿ’ญDecomposition can produce unpleasant odors and temporarily alter the substrate chemistry.
๐Ÿ˜ฉExcess moisture + organic matter can encourage fungus gnats, mites, and other decomposers to proliferate.
๐ŸชDeep substrate can be useful for Cubaris, particularly because they can retreat deeper when surface conditions become unfavorable. But that doesnโ€™t mean every small Cubaris enclosure needs a huge amount of substrateโ€”especially with only 3โ€“4 animals. You need about 5-10cm.
๐Ÿ›Hides are probably more important!

The goal isnโ€™t โ€œas much substrate and leaf litter as possible.โ€ Itโ€™s enough substrate, food, cover, moisture gradient, and ventilation for the actual colony size. As the colony grows, you can add more leaf litter and organic material accordingly.
A lot of people experience huge colony crashes and mold and anaerobic bacteria and suffocation due to waterlogged soil is a big contributing factor.

Please keep leaf litter out in the open, not stuck under hides or moss. This encourages bad bacteria to grow and will quickly kill off your isopods. Especially if you only have a few.

The isopods will find their own food and take it to their hiding places.

Top up necessary food when it depletes.

Especially for decayed plant matter and wood, keep it in the dry areas. They will grow mold extremely quickly in humid tanks.
Use sparingly and check it often.

If you want to add a baked clay item into your tank.

Please make sure to sand it first with 100- 180grit sandpaper.

Then coat it in 1:1 art resin epoxy.

And the final stage is that you must incubate it at around 25-30degrees for at least 2 or 3 days.

Then it must be left to โ€œoff-gasโ€ for at least two weeks.

Then wash it thoroughly with dish soap and water.

Then finally wash it extremely thoroughly with warm clean water.

The epoxy resin is what makes your sculpture indestructible, waterproof, and isopod proof. They cannot munch on it because itโ€™s too smooth.
