This week, Carl is out in the field with Kugae and Wolf, carrying out an important part of our gundog training known as dogging in.
Working around live game is a real test of a spaniel's steadiness, control and ability to listen to its handler, especially when their natural hunting instincts kick in!
We're taking you behind the scenes to show what this training involves and why it's such an important part of developing a working gundog.

🐾 Why do we use Marker Dummies in our gundog training?
One of the foundations of more advanced retrieving is teaching your dog to take a confident, straight line away from you.
Our Marker Dummies give the dog a clear visual target while they’re learning. As their confidence and understanding develop, we can gradually make the exercise more challenging and start working towards blind retrieves.
We’ve put together a new blog explaining how we use Marker Dummies at Kugae, including our three-dummy exercise and how we adapt it for different dogs.

Meet Dougie! 👋
Dougie is one of our young English Springer Spaniels and, if you've watched our latest video, you'll have seen plenty of him!
He’s Rosie’s son and Kugae’s son, so he has two of our own working spaniels behind him. He’s a high-drive young dog with plenty of enthusiasm, and we’ve been taking our time building his training and maturity rather than rushing him.
Our latest YouTube video follows Dougie out in the field, showing where his training is now, how he’s learning to stay close and controlled around game, and what we’ll be working on next.
🎥 If you haven't watched Dougie's latest update yet, you can find it on our channel.

We’ve also put together a new blog to go alongside it, with more advice and information on the slip leads we use ourselves at Kugae Gundogs.
