How to Drive a Linear Motor? | Servo Drive, Encoder & Motion Control Explained
How do you drive a linear motor, and how does a servo drive control its speed, position, direction, and force?
In this video, HCY Automation explains how a high-performance linear motor drive system works and why servo drives, linear encoders, and motion controllers are essential for precision motion control.
A typical closed-loop system works like this:
Motion Controller → Servo Drive → Linear Motor → Load
Linear Encoder → Position Feedback → Servo Drive / Controller
Unlike conventional rotary servo systems using ball screws, belts, gears, or other mechanical transmission components, linear motors generate thrust directly in a straight line.
The servo drive regulates motor current to control force, acceleration, velocity, direction, deceleration, and positioning, while the linear encoder provides continuous position feedback for closed-loop control.
Why use a linear motor?
• Direct-drive linear motion
• High acceleration and speed
• Fast dynamic response
• High positioning accuracy
• Smooth motion control
• Excellent performance in high-frequency reciprocating applications
Linear motor systems are widely used in:
• Semiconductor equipment
• Laser processing systems
• Precision inspection
• Robotics
• CNC and advanced manufacturing
• Pick-and-place automation
• Electronic assembly
• High-speed positioning systems
HCY Automation provides customized linear motor and precision motion solutions based on your stroke, payload, force, speed, acceleration, accuracy, duty cycle, and installation requirements.

How Precision Motion Is Enabling the Future of Photonics Manufacturing Precision Motion Is Driving the Future of Photonics Manufacturing
The rapid growth of AI data centers, silicon photonics, optical communication, and advanced optical packaging is pushing photonic devices toward:
✓ Higher bandwidth ✓ Smaller form factors ✓ Higher integration ✓ Greater manufacturing reliability
Behind every high-performance optical module lies a critical challenge:
How can fibers, lasers, lenses, and photonic chips be aligned with sub-micron precision and long-term stability?
The answer is advanced precision motion technology.
Powered by ironless linear motors, multi-axis positioning stages, and automated fiber alignment systems, modern photonics manufacturing is achieving faster alignment, higher coupling efficiency, and scalable production.
Why Photonics Manufacturing Requires Ultra-Precision Motion
Optical devices depend on extremely accurate light coupling between components.
A tiny positional error between:
• Fiber and waveguide • Laser diode and lens • Fiber and photonic chip
can significantly reduce optical performance.
Modern photonics assembly requires motion solutions with:
✓ Sub-micron positioning accuracy ✓ High repeatability over millions of cycles ✓ Ultra-smooth vibration-free movement ✓ Fast active alignment capability ✓ Compact integration for automation
Key applications include:
🔹 Fiber-to-fiber alignment

What Is a U-type Coreless Linear Motor?
A U-channel coreless linear motor (also called an ironless linear motor) is a direct-drive actuator that converts electrical energy into linear mechanical force without gears, belts, ball screws, or rack-and-pinion systems.
The "U-channel" name comes from its physical structure: two parallel rows of rare-earth permanent magnets face each other inside a U-shaped track, with a non-magnetic forcer coil riding in the gap between them. The coil contains no iron laminations — only copper windings encapsulated in epoxy resin or ceramic.
Because there is zero iron in the moving coil, three critical things happen:
Zero cogging force — no periodic force ripple as the coil passes magnet poles
Zero magnetic attraction between forcer and track — no downward pull on bearings
Extremely low moving mass — enabling accelerations that mechanical systems cannot match
Where This Technology Runs Today
Semiconductor Manufacturing (29% of coreless motor demand)
Photolithography stages: Nanometer-level wafer and reticle positioning with zero backlash
Wafer inspection & metrology: Constant-velocity scanning with <0.4% speed ripple for defect detection
Vacuum environments: Coreless designs minimize outgassing and particle generation for etch/deposition tools
Robotics & Automation
Pick-and-place systems operating at thousands of cycles per minute
Wafer handling robots in vacuum and inert gas environments
Precision Manufacturing
Laser cutting, water jet processing, optical alignment
Medical imaging (MRI/CT scanning tables) and life sciences instrumentation

Why can’t you run heavy loads directly with just a servo motor?
Have you ever wondered why nearly every industrial machine pairs a motor with a gear reducer?
A gearbox has no power source by itself. It’s just a set of precision gears. The motor provides rotation, and the reducer transforms that power.
First: Torque multiplication. Electric motors run fast but lack torque. A planetary gear reducer trades speed for massive torque output to drive heavy loads.
Second: Inertia matching. Heavy rotary loads shock the motor on start and stop. The gearbox reduces reflected inertia dramatically, protecting encoders and bearings.
Third: Better positioning accuracy. Gear reduction improves motion resolution, while low-backlash gearboxes guarantee repeatable movement for robots and CNC machines.
Last: Speed adjustment. Motors run at thousands of RPM, but most factory equipment only needs slow, steady rotation.
Motor = Power Source
Gear Reducer = Torque & Precision Translator
Together, they form the backbone of modern automation.
