When Abraham Finished Talking With God | Genesis 18:33 | The Christian Cowboy Life

Genesis 18 ends with something that really makes you stop and think.

Abraham had stood before God and pleaded for the righteous in Sodom. He kept asking, and God kept answering him. Abraham went from fifty righteous people all the way down to ten.

Then the conversation ended.

“So the LORD went His way as soon as He had finished speaking with Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.”
— Genesis 18:33 NKJV

I love how personal this conversation feels. Abraham wasn’t afraid to bring his questions and concerns before God. And God patiently answered him.

Abraham didn’t get everything he asked for, but he trusted the Judge of all the earth to do what is right.

Sometimes we may not understand what God is doing either. But we can still bring our questions to Him and trust His character. 🤠📖✝️

God Is Not Eager to Destroy | Genesis 18:26 | The Christian Cowboy Life

God was willing to spare an entire wicked city if He found just fifty righteous people there.

Think about that for a moment.

That tells us something profound about God’s character: He is not eager to destroy. His judgment is real, but His willingness to show mercy is enormous.

In Genesis 18, Abraham is standing before God and pleading for the righteous. I believe Abraham may have had Lot and Lot’s household on his heart. Scripture doesn’t specifically say that, so that’s my personal belief—but knowing that Lot had returned to Sodom makes the connection worth considering.

God tells Abraham that if He finds fifty righteous people in the city, He will spare the whole place for their sake.

“If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”

God’s judgment is real.

But so is His mercy. 🤠📖✝️

There are two things I want us to notice immediately.

1. “Abraham came near”

That’s a beautiful expression.

The LORD is standing there, and Abraham approaches Him.

Abraham isn’t being disrespectful or challenging God as though he knows better. He’s coming near because he has something weighing heavily on his heart.

And what does he ask?

2. “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?”

This is the heart of Abraham’s concern.

And remember what we just discussed about Lot. Abraham knows Lot is in Sodom.

So while Abraham doesn’t mention Lot by name, there’s a very personal reality behind this question.

He’s essentially asking:

“Lord, I know You are going to judge wickedness. But what happens to the righteous people who may be living among them?”

God Knows What’s in Your Heart 🤠✝️

Sarah laughed when she heard God’s promise because what He said seemed impossible. When God questioned her about it, fear caused her to deny that she had laughed.

But God already knew the truth.

Sometimes our fear causes us to hide what we’re really thinking or feeling. God sees beyond our words and knows our hearts.

BEGAT (bih-GAT) means "fathered, or became the parent of."

We read right past it in the genealogies, but every "begat" in Genesis 5 is a link in the chain from Adam to us — and ultimately to Christ.

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?”

That question comes at exactly the right moment.

God had promised Abraham that Sarah would have a son.

But Sarah is old.

She has already passed the normal age of childbearing.

And when she hears the promise, she laughs to herself because the situation seems impossible.

Then God asks:

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?”

Think about that question.

God isn’t asking because He doesn’t know the answer.

He’s asking Sarah—and us—to consider who He is.

From a human perspective, Sarah having a child at her age is impossible.

But God isn’t limited by human ability.

And that’s something we’ve been seeing throughout Abraham’s story.

God told Abraham:

“I am Almighty God.”

Then He promised a son through Sarah.

Now He asks:

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?”

It’s the same message coming from different angles:

What is impossible for man is not impossible for God.

And notice something else.

God doesn’t tell Sarah that her circumstances aren’t real.

They are real.

Her age is real.

Her past barrenness is real.

The impossibility is real—from a human perspective.

But none of those things are greater than God.

That’s an important distinction.

Faith doesn’t require us to pretend that difficult circumstances don’t exist.

Faith recognizes that God is greater than the circumstances.

And this question reaches far beyond Sarah.

How often do we look at something in our own lives and think:

“There is no way.”

Maybe there isn’t a way that we can see.

But the question remains:

“Is anything too hard for the LORD?”

Sarah’s situation looked impossible.

God’s promise didn’t.

And the rest of Genesis 18 is going to show us exactly what happens when God makes a promise that human beings could never accomplish on their own.

“So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him.”

Look at those last words:

“That very same day.”

God had given Abraham a difficult command.

And Abraham didn’t put it off.

He didn’t say:

“I’ll get around to it tomorrow.”

He didn’t debate it.

He didn’t wait until it was convenient.

He obeyed.

And notice how many people were involved.

This wasn’t just Abraham and Ishmael.

Every male in Abraham’s household was circumcised.

That included his own son Ishmael and the men who were part of his household.

God had given Abraham a covenant sign, and Abraham made sure the command was carried out throughout his household.

There’s also something important about Ishmael.

God had just told Abraham that Isaac would be the son through whom the covenant would continue.

But Ishmael was still Abraham’s son.

And Abraham didn’t leave him out.

He obeyed God concerning Ishmael too.

The phrase “as God had said to him” is really the heart of this verse.

Abraham didn’t modify God’s command to make it easier.

He didn’t choose which parts he wanted to obey.

He simply did what God had told him to do.

And that brings us back to something we’ve seen throughout Abraham’s story.

Faith isn’t merely believing that God can do something.

Faith responds to God.

Abraham believed God’s promise.

And now his belief produced obedience.

That’s something worth thinking about in our own lives.

It’s easy to say we trust God.

But what happens when God asks us to actually do something?

Abraham shows us what obedience looks like:

Hear what God says.

Trust Him.

And then do it.

“And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly…”

God now addresses Ishmael.

And the first thing He says is:

“I have heard you.”

Remember, Abraham had asked God:

“Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”

Abraham loved his son.

He wanted Ishmael to have God’s blessing.

And God heard him.

But notice the difference between Ishmael’s blessing and Isaac’s covenant.

God had just said that Isaac would be the son through whom He would establish His covenant.

Now God says Ishmael will also be blessed.

“I have blessed him…”

God promises that Ishmael will become fruitful and that his descendants will multiply greatly.

Then He says:

“He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.”

So God’s answer isn’t:

“Ishmael doesn’t matter.”

Quite the opposite.

God has a purpose and blessing for Ishmael too.

But God’s purposes for Ishmael and Isaac are different.

And there’s something encouraging here.

Abraham asked God for something concerning Ishmael.

God didn’t grant exactly what Abraham asked for—but He didn’t ignore the prayer either.

God heard him.

And God responded according to His own purposes.

That’s an important lesson about prayer.

Sometimes we ask God for one specific outcome because we can only see what is in front of us.

But God sees the entire picture.

Abraham wanted Ishmael to be the covenant son.

God said Isaac would be.

But God still had a plan for Ishmael.

God’s “no” to one request wasn’t a “no” to Ishmael.

And that reminds us that when God answers differently than we expected, it doesn’t mean He has stopped caring.

God hears.

God knows.

And God remains faithful to His purposes.

“Then God said: ‘No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.’”

God answers Abraham very clearly.

Abraham had just asked God to let Ishmael be the one through whom the promise would continue.

But God says:

“No.”

Not because God had forgotten Ishmael.

Not because Ishmael didn’t matter.

God had already promised to bless Ishmael.

But God had a specific plan for the covenant.

“Sarah your wife shall bear you a son.”

This is the first time God gives the promised son his name:

Isaac.

And Isaac means “laughter.”

That name is going to become very meaningful because Abraham and Sarah are about to experience something that sounds almost unbelievable.

A 90-year-old woman will have a child.

And remember what God said back in verse 1:

“I am Almighty God.”

Now we are seeing exactly why that matters.

Then God says:

“I will establish My covenant with him…”

This is important.

God is making a distinction between blessing Ishmael and establishing the covenant through Isaac.

Ishmael would become a great nation.

But Isaac would be the son through whom God would continue the covenant promise.

God’s plan wasn’t being changed because Abraham asked for Ishmael.

God had already determined what He was going to do.

And that teaches us something about prayer.

We can bring our desires to God.

We can ask Him for what we want.

But prayer doesn’t mean God changes His purposes to match ours.

Sometimes God’s answer is:

“Yes.”

Sometimes it’s:

“No.”

And sometimes, like Abraham here, we discover that God has something different—and bigger—in mind.

Abraham had a plan.

God had a promise.

And God’s promise was going to stand.
