English Story

One morning, Mulla Nasruddin went fishing at the river outside his town. After waiting patiently for some time, he finally caught a beautiful silver fish. Just as he was about to place it in his basket, the fish suddenly spoke and said, “Please do not take me home! I can grant you one special wish.” Mulla stared at the fish in surprise and rubbed his eyes to make sure he was awake.

Mulla thought carefully and said, “I could ask for gold, a bigger house, or a treasure, but I want to know something first. If you can grant wishes, why were you caught so easily?” The fish became quiet for a moment and then replied, “I suppose I was not thinking carefully.” Mulla laughed and said, “Then perhaps we both have something to learn today!”

The fish offered Mulla another chance to make his wish. Mulla smiled and said, “My wish is that you become wiser and never get caught so easily again.” The fish was surprised by his answer and asked, “You could have asked for anything. Why did you choose that?” Mulla replied, “A wise fish can avoid the fisherman, but a foolish fish may lose everything while chasing an easy promise.”

The fish thanked Mulla for the unusual lesson and promised to be more careful. Before swimming away, it said, “You have taught me something more valuable than gold.” Mulla smiled and replied, “And you have taught me that sometimes the best reward is helping someone become wiser.” From that day on, Mulla remembered the talking fish whenever he saw the river and wondered whether the fish had become clever enough to avoid every fisherman.

The next morning, Mulla visited the merchant’s shop carrying an empty basket. He said, “I would like to buy some of your finest dates, but I have only one coin.” The merchant laughed and replied, “One coin is not enough.” Mulla nodded and said, “Then perhaps you can give me half a date for one coin.” The merchant became confused but agreed because he wanted the coin.

Mulla carefully took the smallest date from the basket and said, “Since you are charging extra for everything, I will also charge you for the space my basket takes in your shop.” The merchant stared at him and asked, “What do you mean?” Mulla smiled and replied, “If every little thing has a price, then even the space around your goods must have a price!” The townspeople nearby began laughing, and the merchant finally understood the point.

The merchant realized that his greed had made him unreasonable. He apologized to the townspeople and promised to charge fair prices from then on. Mulla smiled and said, “A merchant may become rich by earning honestly, but greed can make him lose the trust of everyone around him.” The merchant remembered those words and slowly became known as a fair and honest shopkeeper.

ایک دن ملا نصرالدین کے شہر میں ایک لالچی تاجر نے اپنی ہر چیز کی قیمت زیادہ لینا شروع کر دی۔ اگر کوئی شخص ایک تھیلا آٹا مانگتا تو وہ چپکے سے قیمت میں ایک اور سکہ شامل کر دیتا۔ شہر کے لوگ شکایت کرتے، لیکن تاجر ہمیشہ کہتا، “کاروبار تو کاروبار ہے!” ملا نے جب یہ بات سنی تو انہوں نے اسے سبق سکھانے کا فیصلہ کیا۔

One evening, Mulla Nasruddin was walking home when he saw an old merchant selling a beautiful carpet in the market. The merchant claimed that it was a magical flying carpet that could carry anyone through the air. Mulla looked at the carpet, scratched his beard, and asked, “Does it really fly?” The merchant confidently replied, “Of course! Just sit on it and give it a command.”

Mulla decided to test it, so he placed the carpet on a small hill outside the town and sat carefully in the middle. “Fly!” he shouted. Nothing happened. He tried again, this time waving his arms dramatically. Still, the carpet did not move. The merchant began to look nervous, but Mulla simply smiled and said, “Perhaps it needs a little encouragement.”

Mulla then remembered that the merchant had said the carpet needed a command. He stood up, held the carpet firmly, and shouted, “Take me to the palace!” A strong breeze suddenly swept across the hill, lifting one corner of the carpet and sending Mulla tumbling gently down the slope. He landed safely in a pile of hay while the carpet landed beside him. The townspeople burst into laughter.

Mulla got up, dusted himself off, and said, “Well, it certainly moved, but I think the wind deserves most of the credit!” The merchant admitted that the carpet was ordinary and that he had exaggerated its powers to attract buyers. Mulla smiled and said, “Before believing a wonderful promise, test it carefully.” From that day on, the townspeople remembered that exciting claims should always be checked before being trusted.

ایک شام ملا نصرالدین گھر واپس جا رہے تھے کہ انہوں نے بازار میں ایک بوڑھے تاجر کو ایک خوبصورت قالین بیچتے دیکھا۔ تاجر دعویٰ کر رہا تھا کہ یہ ایک جادوئی اڑنے والا قالین ہے جو کسی بھی شخص کو ہوا میں لے جا سکتا ہے۔ ملا نے قالین کو دیکھا، اپنی داڑھی پر ہاتھ پھیرا اور پوچھا، “کیا یہ واقعی اڑتا ہے؟” تاجر نے اعتماد سے جواب دیا، “بالکل! بس اس پر بیٹھیں اور اسے حکم دیں۔”

One day, the Sultan gathered the wisest people in his palace and gave them a difficult riddle. He placed a beautiful golden box on the table and said, “Inside this box is something that becomes greater when you give it away, but smaller when you keep it only for yourself. What is it?” The scholars thought for a long time, but none could find the answer.

Mulla Nasruddin was standing at the back of the room and listening quietly. The Sultan noticed him and asked, “Mulla, do you know the answer?” Mulla smiled and said, “Of course, Your Majesty, but I need to demonstrate it.” The Sultan agreed and asked what he needed.

Mulla took a handful of dates from the palace table and gave them to a servant. Then he asked the servant to share them with everyone in the room. Soon, the dates were enjoyed by many people, and everyone smiled. Mulla turned to the Sultan and said, “The answer is kindness. The more you share kindness, the more it spreads. But if you keep it only for yourself, it becomes smaller because nobody else can benefit from it.”

The Sultan was impressed by Mulla’s simple demonstration and declared that the riddle had been solved. He thanked Mulla and said, “You have shown us that a wise answer does not always need complicated words.” Mulla bowed and replied, “Sometimes the best way to solve a difficult question is to show the answer instead of merely explaining it.”

Urdu Story

ایک دن سلطان نے اپنے محل میں شہر کے سب سے عقلمند لوگوں کو جمع کیا اور ان سے ایک مشکل پہیلی پوچھی۔ انہوں نے میز پر ایک خوبصورت سنہری صندوق رکھا اور کہا، “اس صندوق میں ایسی چیز ہے جو دوسروں کو دینے سے بڑھتی ہے، لیکن صرف اپنے پاس رکھنے سے کم ہو جاتی ہے۔ وہ کیا ہے؟” علماء نے کافی دیر تک سوچا، لیکن کوئی بھی جواب نہ دے سکا۔

The thief asked, “Why are you helping me?” Mulla smiled and replied, “Because I know you will not be able to carry the large sack for long. The smaller one will be easier!” The thief became suspicious but decided to follow Mulla’s strange advice. He picked up the smaller sack while Mulla carried the large one.

As they reached the end of the street, the thief finally asked, “Where are we going?” Mulla pointed toward the local guard’s house and said, “There! I thought you wanted to save me the trouble of carrying these sacks there myself.” The thief suddenly realized that Mulla had tricked him into carrying the stolen goods directly toward the guards.

The thief dropped the sack and ran away, while Mulla laughed and returned home with his belongings. The next morning, he told his neighbors what had happened and said, “Sometimes the best way to stop a clever trick is to let the trickster think that everything is going according to his plan.” The neighbors laughed, and everyone admired Mulla’s calm and clever thinking.

Urdu Story

ایک رات ملا نصرالدین اپنے صحن میں بیٹھے تھے کہ انہیں سامان رکھنے والے کمرے کے قریب کسی کے چلنے کی آواز سنائی دی۔ انہوں نے باہر دیکھا تو ایک چور ایک بڑی بوری اٹھا کر لے جانے کی کوشش کر رہا تھا۔ ملا نے شور مچانے کے بجائے سکون سے اس کے پاس جا کر کہا، “تم یہ بوری لے جا رہے ہو؟ اچھا! یہ چھوٹی والی بھی لے جاؤ۔” چور ملا کو حیرت سے دیکھنے لگا۔

One morning, Mulla Nasruddin hired a servant to help with the work around his house. The servant seemed polite at first, but he was extremely lazy. Whenever Mulla asked him to bring water, clean the courtyard, or carry something, he always found an excuse to sit down and rest.

One day, Mulla asked the servant to bring a bucket of water from the well. The servant slowly walked toward the well but returned without any water. “Mulla, the bucket is too heavy,” he complained. Mulla looked at him and calmly said, “Then bring the water one cup at a time.” The servant realized that Mulla was not going to accept another excuse.

The next day, the servant tried to avoid cleaning the courtyard by saying that the dust would only come back again. Mulla smiled and handed him a broom. “Then clean it today,” he said, “and tomorrow we will decide what to do about tomorrow’s dust.” The servant had no answer and finally began working.

After a few days, the servant became much more active. He realized that every excuse only made his work harder and delayed everything. Mulla smiled and said, “Work does not become easier by avoiding it. The sooner you begin, the sooner you finish.” The servant learned that responsibility and steady effort are better than excuses and laziness.
