Ardra occupies 6°40′ to 20°00′ Gemini, and its first Pada extends from 6°40′ to 10°00′ Gemini, falling in Sagittarius Navamsha.

Ardra is ruled by Rahu, its Devata is Rudra, Gemini is ruled by Mercury and Sagittarius Navamsha is ruled by Jupiter. This creates a very meaningful combination for the source story.

Mercury gives skill, trade, movement, communication and multiplicity; Rahu intensifies appetite, fascination and crossing of established boundaries; Rudra brings disruption and the destruction of a previous order; while Jupiter in the Navamsha introduces Dharma, conscience, pilgrimage, charity and the possibility of understanding the consequences of one’s choices.

At the lower level, desire destroys an existing structure before wisdom has decided what should replace it. At the higher level, the disruption becomes a genuine purification through which life is rebuilt on a more truthful foundation.

Pitru Dosha and Pitru Tarpan Are NOT the Same Thing

One confusion I see even among Jyotish students is this: “If I do Pitru Tarpan, does it mean I have Pitru Dosha?” Absolutely not. Pitru Dosha and Pitru Tarpan belong to two different levels of understanding. Pitru Dosha is a Jyotish diagnosis where we study specific conditions connected with Surya, the 9th house, its lord, lineage and other supporting factors.

Even here, one placement alone should never be enough to frighten a person. Pitru Tarpan, on the other hand, is a traditional act of remembering and honouring our Pitṛs. You do not need a “dosha” in your horoscope before you remember your grandfather, great-grandfather or the people because of whom you are standing here today.

This distinction is very important because modern astrology has sometimes converted Pitru into fear. Someone sees Rahu with Sun, Saturn influencing the 9th, or some problem in the 9th lord and immediately announces, “Your ancestors are angry.” But Jyotish should be more intelligent than this.

An afflicted Sun or 9th house may show difficulty connected with father, family dharma, authority, inheritance, continuity of tradition or some unresolved pattern in the lineage. It does not automatically prove that a departed ancestor is sitting somewhere and punishing the native. A proper astrologer has to study the whole horoscope, repetition of the theme and actual family history before reaching any conclusion.

Śrāddha and Tarpan have a much wider meaning. The Mahābhārata itself gives considerable importance to Śrāddha and offerings of water to the Pitṛs. The principle is beautiful: my existence did not start with me. My body came through a lineage; language, samskāra, property, education, habits and even many weaknesses came through people before me.

Therefore Pitru Paksha is a time when the living consciously acknowledge that debt. Think about this in modern language also: one generation creates wealth and another inherits it; one generation creates debt and another repays it; one generation develops a habit of education and three generations benefit from it. We inherit much more than DNA. This is why Pitṛ Ṛṇa is such a deep idea.

So Pitru Tarpan should not be reduced to a “remedy for Pitru Dosha.” A person with no special Pitru Dosha can perform Tarpan because gratitude does not require a problem first. And a person who has difficult ancestral indications in the horoscope should not think that pouring water mechanically will erase every problem.

The deeper Tarpan is also to understand the lineage: preserve what was good, correct what was unhealthy, fulfil responsibilities towards parents and elders, settle family duties where possible and avoid passing the same unresolved patterns to the next generation. Then ritual and Jyotish begin speaking the same language.

During this Pitru Paksha we are helping those who want to perform Tarpan and Pind Daan in the traditional manner through our Tarpan and Pind Daan programme. Those who cannot personally arrange these rituals can join us and participate with proper guidance. But I want Jyotish students to answer one question in the comments: have we made a mistake by treating every ancestral ritual as a “Pitru Dosha remedy”? Or should Pitru Paksha first be understood as gratitude, responsibility and continuity of the lineage?

Mrigashira Pada 4 extends approximately from 3°20′ to 6°40′ Gemini and falls in Scorpio Navamsha. Mrigashira is ruled by Mars, Gemini is ruled by Mercury, Scorpio Navamsha is again ruled by Mars and the Devata of Mrigashira is Soma. Mars therefore becomes doubly important in this Pada: Mars rules the Nakshatra and also the Navamsha.

This is especially meaningful because Mars is traditionally an important Karaka for brothers and sibling dynamics, while Mercury governs calculation, division, documents, negotiation and commercial exchange. The source story itself revolves around a younger brother, division of wealth, refusal of a share and an irreversible conflict, making the Mercury-Mars structure unusually relevant.

At its higher level this combination can produce somebody who is extremely capable of investigating complex financial matters, protecting family assets, handling inheritance, finding hidden value and taking strong decisions during disputes. At its lower level, calculation becomes suspicion, preservation becomes control and a disagreement about division becomes an all-or-nothing battle.
