I was sitting with my sheikh after ʿAsr in the Prophet’s ﷺ Mosque. He asked me what book I had brought, and when I told him it was Alfiyyat Ibn Malik — a didactic poem on Arabic grammar — he recited a line from it and asked whether I remembered it.
When I admitted that I had memorized it before but had since forgotten it, he told me about how they learn poems in Mauritania.
He said there was a sheikh he knew who would learn half a line from a didactic poem. When he went to his father wanting to learn the second half, his father would refuse and send him away. The reason was that they would first learn and master the explanation of that half-line completely before moving on.
Some of them advise the following method: take two lines and learn their sharh. Then repeat those two lines twenty times after each salah. If you do this after the five daily prayers, you will have repeated them one hundred times in a single day. By then, they will be firmly etched in your memory. The next day, move on to the next two lines.
The sheikh said that if you want to memorize the Qur’an, you can apply the same principle. Take a small portion — perhaps half a page each day — and repeat it as much as you can. He said the best times are before and after Fajr.
But once you choose a time for the Qur’an, you should treat that time like waqf: it cannot be transferred or given to anyone else. If you do this consistently, he said, you can easily memorize half a juz every month.
I realized that their approach rests on two important principles that they place tremendous emphasis on: meticulousness and consistency.
They are never concerned with how quickly you finish the Qur’an. When I asked the sheikh whether I could resume reading to him from where I had stopped during Ramadan (when i was last here in Madinah), he told me to begin again from the start and read it to him from the beginning.
But when it comes to consistency, they are extremely strict.
The last time I was absent for a day, he told me that he accepts only two excuses:
1. You are unconscious. 2. You are in al-Baqiʿ — meaning, you are dead.
Meticulousness combined with consistency is an extremely powerful approach. InshaAllah, these two qualities can help us move mountains when it comes to learning and memorization.
May Allah make this advice beneficial for us, and may He help us apply these principles in our lives.

Researches Islamic topics & classical quotes from over 8000 verified classical Islamic books. Uses authentic translations from Quran.com for ayat. Never lifts quotes from the web or invents them.
You need the Grok Bot app to use it. I haven't done extensive testing. Always verify quotes and references.
What you can do with it:
Ask it a general question like: "What did umar ibn abd al-azeez say about death?" and it will compose an answer with quotes and references.
“Increase your remembrance of death. If you are in hardship of livelihood, it will widen it for you; and if you are in ease of livelihood, it will tighten it for you.”
But when someone actually speaks to you in Arabic… you freeze.
The words are there, but they don’t come out fast enough.
Speaking is a separate skill, and the only way to improve it is through practice.

ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz lived in luxury when he was an amīr. When he became the Khalīfa he abandoned all pleasures.
He says about himself:
إن نفسي تواقة، لم تعطَ من الدنيا شيئًا إلا تاقت إلى ما هو أفضل منه، فلما أعطيت ما لا شيء فوقه من الدنيا تاقت نفسي إلى ما هو أفضل منه — يعني: الجنة.
“My soul is one that yearns (for that which is better). It was never given anything of this world except that it longed for what was better than it.
So when I was given what has nothing above it in this world — i.e., the khilāfa, my soul longed for what is better than that” — meaning Paradise.

How???!!! 😮
I read in the biography of Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik:
وكان من الأكلة المذكورين؛ أكل في مجلس سبعين رمانة وخروفا وست دجاجات ومكوك
زبيب طائفي
“He was one of the renowned great eaters. In a single sitting, he ate seventy pomegranates, a lamb, six chickens, and a makkūk of Ṭāʾif raisins.”
مكوك (makkūk)
is an old unit of dry measure whose exact quantity varied by place and period.
