the songs on this project actually started as three separate things: a heavy project from before moths, a hip-hop lean, and a funky project. i ended up throwing them all into the same logic session just to see what would happen.
hearing them side-by-side made me realize that “the world” isn’t about sticking to one genre. it’s about the cohesion of the contrast.
next time you start a track, pick a key you never use. contrast is what creates “heaviness.”
usually, i build a wall of vocals. high octaves, harmonies, the whole thing.
it’s my safety net. but for “the best of me,” i practiced the art of the mute button.
i wanted to see if a lower register could carry the weight on its own. muting those high tracks felt wrong at first, but it gave the song a vulnerability i wasn’t expecting. complex layers are cool, but sometimes space is what
actually moves the needle.
