Iraq, US Reach Understanding on Cash Dollar Shipments

Baghdad: Iraq has reached an understanding with the United States to continue shipments of US dollar cash to the country, government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi said.

A new dollar shipment is expected to arrive in the coming days to meet legitimate foreign-currency needs, according to the Iraqi News Agency. Al-Aboudi said the agreement follows Iraq’s efforts to strengthen oversight of dollar distribution, curb misuse of foreign currency and expand electronic payments.

The United States had paused some cash dollar shipments to Iraq in April, with reports linking the move to concerns over Iran-backed armed groups and financial controls. Some physical shipments resumed in July.

Iraq’s oil revenues are held through accounts at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, giving Washington significant oversight of dollar transfers to Baghdad.

The latest understanding comes as Iraq works to tighten financial regulations and gradually shift towards a digital economy.
