Today, Giovanna and I received this response from the White House regarding our concerns about abortion and the protection of preborn children.

President Trump, there are important truths in this letter that we agree with.

We agree that every human being has a God-given right to life. We agree that children in the womb possess inherent dignity and worth. We also recognize the actions your administration has taken regarding abortion, including enforcing the Hyde Amendment, reinstating the Mexico City Policy, and pardoning pro-life activists.

But there is a fundamental contradiction in this letter that cannot be ignored.

The letter begins by affirming that “every human being has a God-given right to life” and speaks of protecting the sanctity of “every human life.”

Yet shortly afterward, it celebrates the Supreme Court returning abortion policy to the individual states.

If the child in the womb truly is a human being with a God-given right to life, how can protecting that life be left up to the states?

A fundamental right does not change when you cross a state line.

A child in Pennsylvania has the same value and the same right to life as a child in Texas. We would never say that the fundamental right to life of any other innocent human being should depend upon geography, popular vote, or state policy.

Why should it be different for a child in the womb?

Overturning Roe v. Wade did not abolish abortion or establish equal protection for preborn children. It returned abortion policy to the states, but no state currently provides preborn children the same legal protection against intentional killing that born people receive. Abortion remains legally permitted in every state in at least some circumstances.

That is where we fundamentally disagree with the traditional pro-life approach.

Abortion should not merely be regulated, restricted, or returned to the states. It should be abolished.

If we truly believe what this letter says—that every human being is created in the image of God, possesses inherent dignity, and has a God-given right to life—then our laws should reflect that truth.

The intentional killing of a child in the womb should be treated according to the same laws and principles of justice that protect every other human being.

Mr. President, we appreciate receiving a response, and we agree with the truth expressed in parts of this letter. But we are asking you, and every elected official who calls themselves pro-life, to follow that truth to its logical conclusion:

If they are human beings, protect them as human beings.

Equal protection. From fertilization. Abolish abortion.
