One of you sent me an article from someone that a lot of you may know saying flax isn't healthy, and since it's an ingredient I use in a lot of my recipes, I wanted to see if there was some new information I wasn't aware of. There's not.
Yes, flax has phytoestrogens. But that doesn't mean you're pouring estrogen into your body, and that's where the article starts to go wayyy off the tracks. In human trials, flax either barely moved sex hormones or actually LOWERED some estrogen levels.
The cancer part is even stranger. The article says flax could feed breast and prostate cancer. But studies in HUMANS have tied flax to LOWER breast cancer risk. One trial in women with breast cancer saw tumor growth markers go down. And in a trial of men with prostate cancer, the ones eating flax had tumors that grew more slowly.
Then there's the catfish. The article talked about CATFISH that had a SOY compound (genistein) put in their water as proof that people shouldn't eat flaxseed. Not the same plant OR species. 🤷🏻♂️
Now, your body doesn't turn the omega-3 in flax into EPA and DHA very well, which is why I still get those from seafood.
But that's a far cry from "ground flax raises bad estrogen and causes cancer." Sure, Flax isn't magic. It's also not going in my trashcan.

One of the first signs of fall around here is goldenrod. Those bright yellow flowers pop up everywhere, and every year people see them and think, "Yep, that's why my allergies are going crazy."
Well, probably not.
Goldenrod gets blamed because it's so easy to spot. The real troublemaker is usually ragweed. Goldenrod pollen is heavy and sticky, so it mostly is on bees and other bugs. Ragweed pollen is very light, floats on the wind, and can travel a LONG way.
Goldenrod is just the one that gets noticed more.
People have used goldenrod for a long time to help with sinus and breathing trouble. It also has plant compounds that calm inflammation.
And goldenrod is in the same plant family as ragweed, so some do people react to it too, but a fraction of people even encounter its pollen to know
It's funny that the plant everybody blames for fall allergies probably isn't the problem, and people have used it for some of those same symptoms for generations.
Meanwhile, ragweed is over there keeping its mouth shut and making you miserable. 😂

Protein talk has gotten pretty silly lately. One group says 50 or 60 grams a day is plenty and one acts like you need half a cow and three shakes before lunch. So how much do you really need?
The RDA is about 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight. For a 180 pound person, that's around 65 grams a day. But the RDA was built to cover maintaining muscle for most healthy adults. It was never meant to be the goal for building muscle, keeping muscle while you lose weight, or staying strong as you age.
Studies on people who work out or need to lose body fat is closer to 0.54-0.73 grams per pound. For a 180 pound person, that's roughly 100-130 grams a day. If you lift hard, the International Society of Sports Nutrition puts most active people at about 0.64-0.91 grams per pound.
Age changes things too. Older muscles don't accept the protein signal as well, so experts suggest at least 0.45-0.54 grams per pound for healthy older adults.
Your body also doesn't store protein the way it stores fat. You keep a small pool of amino acids in your blood and muscles, including the BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine and valine). But that pool is tiny and gets used up fast. When you don't eat enough protein, your body takes what it needs from your muscle.
If you have weight to lose, don't use what the scale says today. Use your goal weight. Extra body fat doesn't need extra protein, so your current weight can push the number way too high. Say you weigh 250 pounds and want to get to 180. Do the math with 180.
For most people trying to stay strong, lose fat and keep muscle, aim for 0.6-0.75 grams per pound of goal body weight. Already at a healthy weight? Use your current weight. For the 250 pound example, that's about 110-135 grams a day, not 150-190 and DEFINITELY not 250. 💪🏻
So no, most people don't need 200 grams, or 50 either. Eat real food, lift something heavy, and stop treating protein like a religion. And remember, if you overeat ANYTHING, you will gain weight, even protein.
How much protein are you eating every day? 👇🏻

"Your cholesterol is high." Okay...which part?
Cholesterol is not poison. Your body MAKES it. Every cell in your body needs it. So do your hormones. So does vitamin D. So does bile, which helps you break down fat.
Your LDL number tells you how much cholesterol is riding around in your blood. It does not tell you how many carriers are hauling it. Those are two different things.
Two people can have the same LDL number. One of them has a few big carriers. The other has a ton of tiny ones. It's the same number on paper, but a very different risk.
Think of it this way. LDL tells you how much stuff is being moved. ApoB tells you how many trucks are on the road. I'd rather know about the trucks.
And big carriers are not automatically safe. A lot of trucks is still a lot of trucks.
So before you chase one number down, ask for more: ApoB, triglycerides, HDL, Lp(a), and a check on your insulin.
Want to see what's really going on in your arteries? A heart calcium scan can show you. A basic blood test can't.
I'm not saying ignore high LDL. I'm saying "high is bad, low is good" is too simple a story for how the body really works.
