This is no “Fat Bear Week”, but our residents could definitely enter the competition in their own special “sanctuary bears” category!

Between the end of hibernation and the start of autumn, our brown bears go through impressive physical changes. Just like their distant cousins living in the Alaskan wilderness, they start eating more right when summer starts to fade to prepare their bodies for hibernation. 🐻🍂

In our sanctuaries, this means their caretakers tailor their diet so the bears get all the nutrients they need to steadily gain weight and form their beautiful winter coat. Every day, they will receive a large variety of vegetables, fruits and nuts, as well as meat and fish… all of this depending on their bearsonal tastes, of course. 🍯

With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Tulani. 🌈🐾

One of our senior leopards at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary who passed away at the age of 23. Tulani had been part of LIONSROCK “since forever,” one of the animals already living on the property when FOUR PAWS took it over in 2006.

In recent months, Tulani’s age began to show more clearly. She grew slower and stiffer in her movements, experienced muscle atrophy and ate more slowly and less often. She was occasionally seen coughing and sometimes refused food altogether. Despite supportive treatments that brought temporary improvements, her condition continued to decline. When she eventually stopped taking her medication, the difficult but compassionate decision was made to let her go, sparing her further suffering. 🌈

Tulani’s passing leaves a deep void, especially for leopard Mike, with whom she shared her life for many years. 💚

Rest well, Tulani. You will be greatly missed.

🌍 World Rabies Day
For many years, we have been working to combat rabies in Southeast Asia as a proud member of the United Against Rabies Forum and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control.

Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms appear. Yet, it is 100% preventable through vaccination and timely post-exposure treatment. Vaccinating animals is one of the most effective ways to protect both animals and people.

That is why we have been actively supporting rabies prevention and elimination efforts across the region.

🇻🇳 In Vietnam, our local partner, Vietnam Cat Welfare, is marking World Rabies Day with an educational session on rabies at an international school. They are also planning a free rabies vaccination event in Cam Ha. In parallel, we continue to engage directly with key government and technical stakeholders to support the elimination of rabies.

🇮🇩 In Bali, we are taking part in a government-led campaign bringing together animal welfare and rabies elimination. The campaign is followed by a health and school day, as well as several competitions focused on rabies awareness. As part of these activities, we have spay/neutered 67 dogs and cats and vaccinated 98 animals.

We have much more planned for the coming weeks and months and will keep you posted on this channel!🐾

Cramped ships. Extreme temperatures. Fierce competition for water. No escape.
Yet these journeys continue, including exports to regions where monitoring animal welfare can be challenging.
We urge European policymakers to end the export of live animals to the Middle East and move towards a system that protects animals from needless suffering. ✊

🐕 One Itchy Dog Named Ngurah🔥
Just look at poor Ngurah. His once-beautiful fur coat was covered in bald patches, a painful sign that something was seriously wrong.
When his owner brought him to our partners at BAWA in Banjar Catur Prahyangan village, Indonesia, the team examined him and quickly realized how much he was suffering.🇮🇩 Ngurah was in constant discomfort, scratching at the itchy areas of his skin again and again, only making his condition worse.

His health had already suffered. He was thin, weak, and clearly struggling. And yet, despite all the pain and discomfort, Ngurah remained an incredibly gentle and friendly dog. He still trusted the people around him and welcomed their help. ❤️
Treatment began right away, and the team also showed his owner how to properly care for Ngurah and manage his condition.
Little by little, things started to change. Ngurah’s skin began to heal, his strength returned, and, most wonderfully, his fur started to grow back. Just look at the last photo, what a difference! 🐾
Ngurah still has a way to go, but he is well on his way to a full recovery. With continued care, we hope to see him become the happy, healthy, and comfortable dog he deserves to be.

Then as a young cow you are loaded onto a ship and forced to continue the journey across the sea. 🚢🌊You are exhausted, thirsty and terrified, and you witness other cows dying. 💔
You endure overcrowding, extreme temperatures, rough conditions and endless stress. 😢
And after this long and exhausting journey, you arrive only to be slaughtered. 🔪

For animals transported across Europe and beyond, suffering does not end when the road journey is over. 🚛➡️🚢

When an animal dies during transport at sea, their body may simply be thrown overboard. 🌊🐄💔

This is not happening somewhere far away. It is happening within the EU and as part of the European live animal transport trade. 🇪🇺

These are living, sentient animals. 🐄❤️ They deserve better than a lifetime of fear and suffering.

How are Gordo and Florencia doing? 🐻

After their remarkable rescue from the former Zoo Luján in Argentina at the end of February, it has been incredibly special watching them slowly settle into their new lives at BEAR SANCTUARY Belitsa in Bulgaria. 💚

Years of hardship have unfortunately left lasting impacts on their health. That's why the onsite team at the sanctuary has been caring for them around the clock, ensuring they feel safe, comfortable, and at home in their new environment. 🌲

Both bears receive regular medication and specialised care to support their wellbeing and help improve their quality of life. They’ve had a quiet summer and, lately, have been spending much of their time snoozing away in the comfort of their own dens.

We will continue to monitor them closely and make sure they receive everything they need to live a comfortable, dignified life! 🐻

🐈 Seeing past the scars 🩹
Sometimes a heartbreaking story can be told in three pictures. Just looking at poor Darko will be enough to understand how much this poor kitten had to go through. We are even covering the horrible open wound on the second image but trust us when we say it was bad. 💔

Darko was only about four months old and in a heartbreaking condition when he arrived at the Pro Natura clinic in Indonesia. 🇮🇩 The veterinary team discovered multiple open wounds on his neck, front leg, and hind leg. He was severely underweight, and the wounds were infested with maggots.

Darko immediately began receiving the care he desperately needed, including treatment for fleas and worms, while his wounds were cleaned and monitored closely. Day by day, with patience, medical care, and plenty of love, he started to heal.
Just one month later, the transformation was remarkable. The wounds on his neck and hind leg had healed completely. He showed everyone what an incredibly affectionate young cat he is.
He was adopted by a loving family who saw not the scars of his past, but the wonderful cat he had become. 🏡
