We finally got our first lake trout on the fly!
Most of the year these fish are sitting 50+ feet deep. Spring and fall is about your only window, when they come up shallow to feed before spawning.
Wind was howling, we're throwing big flies on 8 weights, totally new water. Kind of got lucky and ran into some willing fish.
Man, what a blast.

Nothing kills a good drift like a dry that won't stay up.
Half the time it's not the fly. It's the floatant, or how you're putting it on.
Swipe through before your next hatch. The CDC one catches a lot of guys.
Comment FIELD GUIDE and we'll DM you our favorite rigs and flies.

First pike. Still grinning about it.
Big streamer, 8 weight, strip it fast enough to tick one off. About as far from a dead drift as you can get.
Been a week of firsts out here. Getting out of your comfort zone teaches you more than another day doing what you already know.

The uglier the day looks, the better this hatch gets.
Cold, gray, drizzly — that's when the little olive bugs come off, and those are blue-winged olives.
Most of the eating happens just under the surface, not on top of it, which is why fish rise and refuse your dry.
Hang an emerger off the back of your parachute and that refusal usually turns into an eat.

Iceland sheep... iykyk.
They were everywhere — hillsides, roadsides, just standing there watching us fish.
We started calling them lucky sheep, figuring the more of them around, the better the water had to be.
Then this brown showed up. Not saying it was the sheep. Not saying it wasn't.

Flip over a rock in the shallows and you'll usually find something crawling around under it.
That bug is what the fish are already eating — match the size, shape, and color and you're most of the way there.
Doesn't have to be perfect. Close is usually good enough.

Is there anything prettier than a colored up brook trout?
The blue halos, the orange belly, that white edge on the fins — hard to beat when they're lit up like this.

September trout rarely eat the same thing all day.
Warm afternoon and they're looking up along grassy banks. Gray sky and they're on small mayflies in softer water — same stretch, few hours apart.
The month splits in half too, and the second half fishes smaller. Swipe through for the flies that cover each window.

There's a moment right after the cast where you just sit in it.
Will a fish come up or not? Do I have the right fly? Is this drift any good?
Then one rises and answers all of it at once.
You picked right. You got it done. And that feeling never gets old.

A refusal is rarely a pattern problem.
Fish comes up, looks, turns away. That's usually size or drag talking. Trout read size and shape first, color second.
Catch one of the naturals, hold it next to your fly, and match the body length. Ignore the wings. Low, clear water or pressured fish, go one size smaller.
We break down how we pick the right fly mid-hatch in our Bug Mania video.
