"Once, I saw a shadowmoth in its cocoon, struggling. Like you, I am sensitive to the Force, I didn't merely empathize with it, but I felt it. When shadowmoths strive to break free from their cocoon, they are in pain. I felt its pain. And I felt its envy of the other moths, already free, flying, making music. I wanted to help it."

Jacen shudders. "Oh no, you didn't..."

"Yes. I cut it free."

"No!"

"It sounds like you know what happened next?"

Jacen says: "If they don't escape from the cocoon on their own, they'll never be strong enough to fly, and they suffer and starve to death, worse than what they were experiencing in the cocoon."

"Indeed."

“Pain is itself a god: the taskmaster of life. Pain cracks the whip, and all that lives will move. To live is to be a slave to pain.” -Traitor by Mathew Stover.

Matthew Stover's Traitor, the thirteenth volume of the New Jedi Order series, is not merely a Star Wars novel. It is a philosophical intervention, a book that takes a franchise built on the binary of light and dark and systematically dismantles that binary in the service of a more radical proposition: that the Force has no sides, only potential, and that the only true enemy is the fear that prevents us from acting with conviction.

How similar do you think Vergere's philosophy is to Darth Traya's?

"The dark side will devour those who lack the power to control it. It's a fierce storm of emotion that annihilates anything in its path. It lays waste to the weak and unworthy. But those who are strong can ride the storm winds to unfathomable heights. They can unlock their true potential; they can sever the chains that bind them; they can dominate the world around them. Only those with the power to control the dark side can ever truly be free." -Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil.
