Designing for accessibility isn’t about "checking a box"—it’s about understanding the human scale. 📐♿
When we look at Batas Pambansa Blg. 344 (BP 344), the Philippine Accessibility Law, we aren’t just looking at numbers on a page. We are looking at the exact physical boundaries of a person's reach, sight, and mobility.
Take a closer look at the ergonomics of wheelchair-accessible design:
The Reach Zone: A comfortable side reach ranges from a minimum of 0.23 M to a maximum of 1.35 M to 1.55 M for higher shelves.
The Work Surface: Desk clearances require a maximum height of 1.20 M, with a functional knee depth clearance of 0.40 M to 0.60 M MAX at a comfort height of 0.90 M.
The Footprint: A standard manual wheelchair requires a clear width of 0.61 M to 0.75 M and a length of 1.10 M to 1.50 M to navigate space comfortably.
