Chapter One

(TW! Death/Exicution! Also, angels depicted as villainous, don't read if you're offended by that, please. It is fictional! The prologue is posted below this!)

°•○●○•°•○●○•°•○●○•°•○●○•°•○●○•°•○●○•°•○●○•°•○●

Evangelous looked down at the quivering soul at his feet, shackled and begging for their life as they desperately searched for the eyes of the executioner. The pleading angel would see nothing. Not even a sliver of his face.

The dark angel put his hand on the sobbing cherub’s forehead.
Every orifice on the cherub’s face leaked with light at his touch, and their mouth hung agape with a silent scream.
The lesser angel fell limp as their very soul was incinerated inside of them, and their body crumpled to the golden ground at Evangelouse’s sandal clad feet.

Evangelous dropped his hand and stared down at the lifeless angel before him.

“Well done, Evangelous.” Said a smooth voice to his left. Evangelous turned his head to acknowledge the arch angel at his side.

“Thank you, Uriel…” He sighed.

“Another insubordinate wretch gone.” Uriel stepped closer and leaned over the dead cherub to pluck a feather out of one of their delicate, soft wings. Evangelous averted his gaze. Not that the arch angel would notice. Evangelous’ face was constantly shrouded by a pair of small wings that grew from his head just behind his ears. He kept them pulled tight around his face, with just a sliver of a gap to see through. No one had ever seen his face except for one.

“And with very minimal clean up as always.” Uriel continued. “You should be proud.”

“It isn’t right.” Evangelous said, furrowing his brows.

Uriel tucked the feather into his robes. “What do you mean?”

“They don’t even have the chance to fight back!”
Uriel raised his eyebrow. “Even if they did, my dear death bringer, they would stand no chance against you.”

“I know.”

“So you would rather give them false hope? You give them a swift end.” Uriel stepped over the corpse and glided across the execution hall. Servants would be there soon to carve the wings off of the poor deceased angel’s back and to dispose of the body. Evangelous followed him.

“False hope is better than nothing! They are like lambs to the slaughter!” He argued.

Uriel stopped. “These deaths are not needless, Evangelous. Is that what you think? We do not send innocent angels to execution, my dear. These are criminals.” His tone was sharp and reprimanding.

“Right….” Evangelous mumbled under his breath. Uriel gave him a reassuring smile.

“Now go and relax. Enjoy a nice bath or go see that friend of yours. No more executions are scheduled for today.” He shooed the angel of death away.

Evangelous looked back at the corpse one more time as he turned to leave. How many had he killed in his lifetime? Thousands? Millions? He’d lost count.
He was tired of killing, but it was all he could do. Anything he touched rotted away to nothing. Small animals would collapse of heart attacks if they got too close to him, plants wilted under his feet.
He wished he could leave. Evangelous tried before. He was sent to Earth to reap a very pesky demon posing as a human and terrorizing the Vatican. After doing what he was supposed to do, he simply didn’t leave. He’d fallen for a human gardener during his time in Italy and stayed.
Eventually, his superiors came for him and dragged him back through the golden gates where he belonged. If he did belong anywhere.

Evangelous found himself wandering into the grand library, as he often did after an execution. He found comfort in the historian there, Lucious, his only friend.

Seeing him this time brought no comfort, however. Lucious, like all the historians, scribes, or just general keepers of knowledge, was a cherub. Just like the poor angel that Evangelous had just put down.
He wondered if they were friends or if they had worked together and hung his head with shame, turning to leave before Lucious saw him. He was too late.
Lucious hurried over to him with a smile. Evangelous hung his head in guilt. What if they had worked together?

“Evangelous, you’re later than normal! Is everything alright?” He asked.

“Yes.” Evangelous replied. “Everything is fine.” Had he a mouth he would have been lying through his teeth. “Do you need any help?”

The chubby ginger haired historian shook his head. “I just have a few more tablets to etch. Have a seat?”

Evan sat next to him at his marble desk. “I wonder sometimes… what my life would have been like if they’d never caught me on Earth. If I could have stayed there.”

Lucious thought for a moment. “You would have outlived everyone you cared for. Humans live very short lives. That’s why there is never a shortage of their souls. They are constantly reproducing and dying. Like cattle. That seems so pointless, doesn’t it?”

“No, not at all.” Evangelous sighed. “It sounds peaceful, but I suppose you’re right. I’ve only cared for one human. They would be long dead by now. I wonder what became of that pocket clock I gave them..”

“One cannot be sure.” Lucious looked up at his friend. “Although, if you had stayed on Earth, I would have missed you terribly.”

“How mushy of you, Lucy.” Evangelous chuckled. He would have missed him, too.

Evangelous watched Lucious work. His guilt dissolved as he listened to the gentle etching of a scribe hard at work. His gaze drifted along the tall pillared walls, lined with shelves of stone tablets and scrolls as far as the eyes could see.

“Lucious?” Evangelous asked.

“Yes, my friend?”

“Would you happen to have any information about the reapers that came before me?”
Only one Angel of Death could exist at a time. When one inevitably died, a new reaper would be born to a very unlucky angel who would not survive their birth.
The new reaper would be raised and trained by the arch angels, and then when they died, the cycle would continue. Evangelous knew there were others before him, but what caused their deaths was a mystery to him. No angels died of natural causes.

“Hmm. I could have a look for you tonight.” Lucious offered.

“I would appreciate that a lot.” Evan knew very little about himself. Only that he was a weapon, a pawn, and a pet for the Archangels to use to intimidate or eliminate anyone they didn’t like.

“But,” Lucious began, “In return, you have to show me your face.”

“We’ll see.” Evangelous said.

•○●•○●•○●•○Death Becomes Us●•○●•○●•○●•○●•○
Prologue

Tony sat at his trusty old register, resting his elbows against the glass display counter as he read an out of date newspaper. He was on the second page, reading about a robbery on a pawn shop a couple blocks away from him. One of his competitors.

Better them than me! He thought with a snicker.

A little jingle interrupted his reading. The shop door opened, and a pizza-faced young man stepped out of the early morning rain and onto the clean, dry, rug that Tony had hoped to be able to sell at some point.

Did he not see the mat at the door? He didn’t wipe his feet.

“Good mornin’, looking for something specific?” Tony asked, standing up from behind the counter. The young man shut the door behind him, just as the wind started to pick up outside.

“Kinda, I wanna sell somethin’.” The kid replied, making his way across the antique carpet on the pawnshop floor. Tony nearly cringed.
Maybe he could take it to the drycleaners later. It was his fault for putting it on the floor, but you’d think customers would have the respect to wipe their feet before entering a store when it’s raining outside.

He stopped in front of Tony and started fishing for something in his pocket. He placed it on the glass counter. Tony took his glasses down from atop his head and slipped them onto his nose to examine the object.
An elegant golden stopwatch that glittered in the shop’s fluorescent lights sat in front of him. He picked it up and rolled it over in his hands. A strange symbol was engraved on its top. He was sure it was a different language, but he couldn’t quite tell which one.
When he opened it, the watch face seemed to glow, but not from any paint or LEDs he had ever seen. All of the numbers were Roman numerals, but something was missing.

“There’s no Hallmark.” Tony told him. “What material is it?”

“It’s real gold, I swear. It’s a family heirloom.” He replied.

Tony frowned. “Well, do you have a certificate of authenticity?”

“Well… No, but it’s been in my family for generations! Centuries, even! My Grandad said it’s five hundred years old!”
He’d sell a five hundred year old family heirloom? Well, it certainly seemed authentic. Tony sighed.

The young man pointed at a dusty old console on the shelf behind the tired shop owner.
“I’ll trade you it for that XBox!”

Tony was a bit taken aback. He doubted the console even worked. In any case, there was a clearly visible “NO REFUNDS!” sign just next to him on the counter.

“You’ve got yourself a deal!” He said with a grin, offering a handshake over the counter.

I'm working on the story, and I was thinking that as I work on it, I could share it here bit by bit on my community posts? It was originally going to be a comic, but I was putting a little too much pressure on myself, lol
Would that be something that y'all would like? I could make more shorts and skits about the characters if you guys like them!
