The 18th of the Hebrew month of Elul marks the birth of Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer, known to the world as the Baal Shem Tov, in 1698.

Before him, Judaism often felt reserved for scholars. He insisted otherwise. He taught that the Divine is found not only in the study hall, but in a whispered prayer, a joyful melody, a simple act done with love. That an unlettered Jew reaching upward with sincerity touches something the sharpest mind cannot.

The movement he founded, Chassidut, carried these teachings across the world and reshaped Jewish life for the centuries that followed. A living, deeply personal Judaism, still lighting the way today.
